Just finished the intermediate 15K program from Hal Higdon. Looking for something similar. Have a race coming up in late June. Considered just doing the 15K program again and adjusting the mileages on it......

Also, any drawback to an all downhill half marathon route? Getting to design my own and found a way to get a gradual slope the entirety of the course. Curious if that had any drawbacks to it? This will be a virtual event and I'll be in Jackson Hole, WY if anyone has any good course ideas that don't involve a trail.

Thanks,

I've trained for and completed probably 7 of these over the years. I also used the Marathon training plan from the same site for the one of those I did.

I didn't run them for speed. I did them at first just to prove I could and then finally it was just an easy way to work myself back into shape after a summer of beer and the pool. Im 6ft and was about 200 lbs when I ran the first one My best time was 1:48 or so. I usually just tried to break 2 hours

I pretty much did couch to half marathon on the first one. I just completed week one like three weeks in a row to get myself ready to train

What are you aiming for in terms of your weekly mileage?

This is the training plan I used for my race on Saturday. I feel good. I feel prepared.

I ran every mile at or near race pace (sub-8:40/mile). I made 43/46 scheduled runs but missed a bike or two. I skipped the gym a good bit, especially later in my training as the daily mileage was building. I biked every "hard bike" mile at around 4:00/mile. My "recovery bike" pace was around 4:45/mile. In the gym, I did squats, shoulders, biceps, and core work on Monday and deadlifts, chest, triceps, and core work on Wednesday.

Here is the general schedule:
Sunday - recovery bike
Monday - gym and moderate distance run
Tuesday - moderate distance run
Wednesday- moderate distance run
Thursday - hard bike
Friday - rest
Saturday - long run

Below are the distances I went. They are listed in the order of the days of the week. Keep in mind Sunday and Thursdays are biking days (Sunday is recovery bike and Thursday "hard" bike):
Wk 1 - 12 (bike) - 3 - 3 - 3 - 15 (bike) - rest - 4
Wk 2 - 12 (bike) - 3 - 3 - 3 - 15 (bike) - rest - 5
Wk 3 - 12 (bike) - 3 - 3 - 3 - 15 (bike) - rest - 6
Wk 4 - 12 (bike) - 4 - 3 - 3 - 20 (bike) - rest - 6
Wk 5 - 15 (bike) - 4 - 3 - 3 - 20 (bike) - rest - 7
Wk 6 - 15 (bike) - 4 - 4 - 3 - 20 (bike) - rest - 7
Wk 7 - 15 (bike) - 4 - 4 - 3 - 20 (bike) - rest - 8
Wk 8 - 15 (bike) - 4 - 4 - 4 - 20 (bike) - rest - 9
Wk 9 - 15 (bike) - 5 - 4 - 4 - 20 (bike) - rest - 10
Wk 10- 15 (bike) - 5 - 5 - 4 - 20 (bike) - rest - 11
Wk 11- 15 (bike) - 5 - 5 - 5 - 20 (bike) - rest - 12
Wk 12- 15 (bike) - 4 - 3 - rest - rest - rest - 13.1 (race week)

If you're just looking for running distances (MO - TU - WE - SA):
Wk 1 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 4
Wk 2 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 5
Wk 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 6
Wk 4 - 4 - 3 - 3 - 6
Wk 5 - 4 - 3 - 3 - 7
Wk 6 - 4 - 4 - 3 - 7
Wk 7 - 4 - 4 - 3 - 8
Wk 8 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 9
Wk 9 - 5 - 4 - 4 - 10
Wk 10- 5 - 5 - 4 - 11
Wk 11- 5 - 5 - 5 - 12
Wk 12- 4 - 3 - 0 - 13.1 (race week)

T-alley;

good luck on your race. run hard, run smart.

I'm not a training plan expert but your plan looks to be a get me to the finish line plan. I think this plan and or the pace you are running is below your ability. not that you shouldn't feel good or prepared but I'd say the volume is fairly light and or your goal pace could be faster. do you run the shorter runs at that same "race pace"?

what type of bike are you riding?

again I'm not an expert just my opinion / thoughts

Let me also state I am no expert so please take any advice I give with that understanding.

To an extent, yes. This is my second half marathon. I want to beat my time from my first race and come in under 8:40/mile. During my first race, I would slow considerably as the miles added up. Miles 9, 10, 11, etc., would be in a 9:30+ range.

I have been working hard this winter/spring to get to where I can find a pace and lock it in. I've had a lot of success doing that. For instance, my pacing for my 12-miler last Saturday was:
8:34
8:27
8:35
8:33
8:43
8:39
8:2
8:38
8:38
8:43
8:42
8:39

For simplicity's sake, I have been running all miles in an 8:30-8:40/mile range (race pace). Some have been slightly faster and some have been slightly slower. However, all miles (200+) have been in that range.

I think I'm leaving some improvement on the table. I am faster than the race pace. However, I've trained for 13 weeks with this goal in mind and I will (hopefully - knock on wood) accomplish it tomorrow.

Once the half marathon is over, I am going to train for an olympic triathlon and then a half marathon, so goals and paces will be revisited once again.
