Anyone ever had a pec tear
Mine specifically was the pec minor and one head of my bicep

I never got surgery since it wasn't needed but I skip never got the internal scar tissue out. So every time I attempt to lower myself back down from pull-ups or bring the bar to my chest when benching it doesn't feel pleasant

Guess I can scratch 405 bench press off my bucket list cause it's not happening

That sucks. Can you still get surgery on it?

re: Anyone ever had a pec tear
I was told I didn't need it but I think it's time for a reexamination

It happened about 4 years ago when I was deployed in Afghanistan when I had down time. I rehabbed it on my own. At one point I couldn't bench press the bar much less a push up. I was a medic so I medicated and treated it myself and did the whole deployment term

I'm just unsure if I'll ever bench past 225 again much less 405 lol

re: Anyone ever had a pec tear
Tore my left pec major in high school years ago. The first doctor misdiagnosed it, and after a few months of therapy with no improvement, an ortho correctly diagnosed it. He told me that surgery at that point would be 50/50 at best because of the time that had passed. He said that it was difficult to stretch the muscle back out after being drawn up for so long, and even if it could be stretched, reattaching it would be akin to trying to sewing hamburger meat together.

That’s been over 20 years ago now, and over time, the other muscles have taken over to compensate. That shoulder is definitely more susceptible to things like AC joint separations, so I do still have to be mindful of it, but it isn’t really a huge issue on anything outside of flat bench. Now on bench, I’m definitely much weaker than I would be otherwise. I max at 265, but I rarely go above 245 due to the instability in the shoulder. I’ll never get to 400 (or even 300), but I go heavy on all of my other lifts, and looking at me, you would probably never suspect that there was an issue.

TL;DR: You’re probably too late to get it fixed, but it gets better over time.

re: Anyone ever had a pec tear
It's been about 4 years now

It just sucks bc it affects flat bench (close grip not so much) and incline with Dumbbells aren't bad either. Also lowering g myself down when performing pull-ups suck arse too

re: Anyone ever had a pec tear
The pain definitely gets better. For years, many of those movements felt like a knife stab. Eventually, that went away, but it took a long time. It’s a long process, it can be worked through. One mistake I made for years: either avoiding bench altogether or doing it on a Smith machine, because it didn’t hurt as badly. My chest was severely underdeveloped because of this, and the imbalance probably contributed to several injuries over the years. Even if you have to swallow your pride and drop down in weight on the bench, do it. I feel like having to stabilize the free weights throughout the motion is what finally helped me get those surrounding muscles built up to help compensate for the tear.

re: Anyone ever had a pec tear
Tore my left pec and partially tore my biceps about 12 years ago bench pressing. Hurt like a bitch. Did PT but opted not for surgery bc they told me the strength would never fully return and it would basically be cosmetic. Can’t press heavy weight any more and I definitely can still feel it if I over do it but it doesn’t limit me enough to regret not getting surgery. Recovery took a solid 6-8 months before I could do a pull up or push up again without it spasming like crazy.

re: Anyone ever had a pec tear
tore a pec in HS playing football. last game i ever played in. no surgery but recovery was a bitch of a 4 months.

20 years later it rarely manifests itself. in my 20s it would happen if i was jacking around in tennis or racketball and try a slam too hard.

today only occasionally with pull up or bench if it catches wrong
