I'm contemplating doing this as my main workout. I'd be able to do it in the backyard and I already have the equipment for it. Would this work or will I still need to supplement in gym time or other workouts?

I use sledgehammers.

I like them better as part of a whole. You can get a great shoulder, trap, bicep, core and back workout. Cardio like Tabata is also really simple with them.

The downside is they won't work pushing muscles like chest and triceps or legs. That's why I think they function best as part of a whole, not the whole. Leg and pushing strength still matter. That said, sledgehammers can absolutely do a lot for you in other areas.

Like Rep520 said, it’s better as a part of the routine. It’s a great exercise though. Baseball players, football players and even powerlifters do them.

That’s why you buy a big enough tire to flip and a prowler

That would work. If he adds pushups and that level of leg work, it's a fine overall workout for general fitness.

If he wants to be cheap, he can get a tire that he can lay weight plates in, a rope and use that as a poor man's sled. It will totally work.

Like what, hitting a tire?

They do nothing for me and it tears my hands up

What are you trying to work?

For a metabolic workout, they are great, for an overall program not so much. But with a simple set of gymnastics rings and a hesvy sandbag you could do anything you wanted. Add in a climbing rope, pullups bar, parrallettes and a sled and you can do anything you want pretty mucb
