Do your ankles, feet, and calves acclimate over time?

I continued to pull my calf and my ankles were killing me until I found zone training. I try to keep my heart rate below 140 on most runs and as I lost weight my injuries went away, my pace increased, and my heart rate remained under 140. You may be going to hard to fast.

No doubt! You’re correct on both issues: I’m out there chasing my buddy whose super fast and I’m a big dude (5’8, 195), all muscles, but those lower legs don’t discriminate between muscle and fat.
I can run 30 miles on the road fine, no issues, but 12 miles on the hilly trails burns me!

I’m currently training for a 50k (31mi) and a 40 miler all trails. I did my last 50k at 6h 30m @240 lbs. I run far and lift heavy and have managed to do it injury free for a long time. Run/walking my long runs, I believe, has kept my joints and feet relatively healthy. I use a 4min run to 1min walk ratio for up to 4 hours during training. I never run more than 3x a week and utilize as much hills and/or low impact(cycling) as possible.

That 3x week strategy is smart and probably what’s saving you. Prior to my hill running Saturday I had run 80 miles in 6 days. The continued wear and tear on a micro level is probably what made my trail run so rough.

I do pretty intense running workouts every Thursday evening with my girlfriend's competitive running friend. This usually entails a 3-5 mile warm up on the trails at a nearby park (mostly flat) with anywhere from a 7 min / mile pace to an 8.5 min / mile pace followed by a 5 minute rest then straight in to an interval track workout.

Never really had ankle problems within the 3-5 mile range, but ran 12 miles on the trails in NW Arkansas on Thursday and ankles are still sore. I'd imagine soreness would not have been an issue had I been training on a more rocky trail like the one I ran on Wednesday, even with the jump in distance.

I actually plan on doing a 100K trail race in Arkansas in February. It’s really hilly!
Like you, I never had ankle problems until I did the hill stuff and am following my friend who is much faster than me.

I run trails pretty frequently. It definitely gets my hips, shins and ankles fired up if I go too fast. I am also training for a 50k (I think the same race Macrell is) and I am having to make myself slow down so i can control my stride and hopefully reduce some pain.

I am tall and skinny so I just glide, but Ive torn some shite up trying to go for too much speed.

Which race are you doing? I'd like a reason to go back to the area, but a half is my upper limit (the 12 miles last Thursday is the longest I have ever continuously ran).

Polar + Andy,
What races y’all doing? Here’s my current breakdown/plans:
Screaming monkey—11/7/20 (50k)
Lou garou——12/5/20 (40 miler)
Wild azalea—-1/2/21 (50miler)
Red dirt——2/27/21 (100k)

Children of the Cane 100-miler 11/14/2020
LOVIT 100K 2/24/2021
I feel like I’ll need a break after my first 100-miler for at least a couple weeks so won’t do another ultra until late Feb. will do the Louisiana Marathon in January though if they have it.

Atta boy! Me and a buddy have been discussing a 100miler for end of next year. My dad has cranked out a few (his PR is 18:44). The time commitment to training scares me more than the distance haha

Yeah, I run 70-90 miles a week and to get that distance and especially the long runs in I’m having to run at like 9:30 pace(for reference I race half marathons at a 6:40 pace). So it comes out to nearly 20hrs/week training and the slow running is actually way worse on the body!
If you live in or near Baton Rouge the Children of the Cane is a great one bc it’s right across the bridge in Port Allen(15 minutes from my house) and it’s all flat. And the cool temps of November help a lot to avoid dehydration.

I havent thought of anything past surviving the SM 50k so far. Once I get that done, I will regroup and possibly do 1 or 2 of the 3 others that you mentioned.

My 2021 goal is a 50 miler; which will probably be at SM 2021 due to Big Dog being gone.

I'm doing the Screaming Monkey also. I'm doing the 100 miler, and the summer heat has destroyed my training plan.

I did the Red Dirt 100k the first year of the race. Attempted the 100miler in 2018, but didn't train at all for it, and ended up dropping out at 50miles.

Next year I'm doing:
Red Dirt (haven't decided on a distance)
VOL State (314miles)(not a trail run, but running across the state of TN in July, self supported seemed like a good idea when i registered)
Barkley Fall Classic (32ish hellish miles)(was supposed to do it this year, but had to defer to next year due to all this covid crap)

If you want to look into two really awesome races check out Grand to Grand Ultra (176 mile, self supported, stage race from the north rim of the Grand Canyon, across the desert, to the Grand Staircase and Mauna to Mauna Ultra (156 mile, self supported race from the east side to the west side of Hawaii's big island). Both are pretty expensive, but worth every penny.

Ran Monkey Trails with the RD Saturday. Got my longest run in at 20 miles. We cleared a few limbs off and checked everything out. There is one massive tree that he will have to reroute course through the brush but it will just be a quick jump.

So ready to get it. I am wanting to do this 50K and then train for a 50 miler next year, I would just like to find one towards the end of the year. I hate that Big Dog is retired, hopefully someone will pick it up.

Tejas Trails has several upcoming races to choose from. Will likely do one or two, starting with Trailway.
