a simple set of adjustable dumbbells and an adjustable bench, set of gym rings and a pull up bar is more than enough
if you wanted, start with a sandbag, gymnastics rings and a pull up bar. that away not out a lot of money if you end up not using it

My sister just got a Tonal. I go over twice a week to use it. It was super expensive (like 5K, plus a monthly subscription), but I use it for free. It's really cool and easy to use. I know there are a lot of similar type of units, that are under 1K. I think I would get one of those. It just makes things simpler..
