Any ideas on what’s wrong with my knee?

A few weeks back, randomly, the back of one of my knees started feeling swollen. It hasn’t stopped feeling like this, but hasn’t gotten better or worse. My gf tells me it doesn’t look swollen.

I’ve tried Ice, rest, bengay, knee braces, but no progression. I lift 4-5 days a week and play pickup basketball or stationary bike for cardio. Haven’t been able to squat in a few weeks, too uncomfortable and I’m too scared to mess something up.

Any ideas on what it might be? What kind of doctor would you recommend if I can’t get it better myself?

How old are you? May just need more rest.

Likely meniscus tear causing a baker’s cyst in back of knee. See an ortho. Get mri of knee

I figured I would have to see someone about it. Thanks.

Probably a meniscus tear of sorts. Currently dealing with a lateral, posterior version myself.

In my mid-30's, my knee started to have slight pain and would feel 'weaker' than the other one. I play a lot of basketball also and continued playing through it. At the time, I was always able to jump off my left leg better (knee with issues) but that changed.

The pain lasted 3-6 months and I realized that my injured leg's quad atrophied quite a bit. I think it was due to favoring the good leg when exercising or walking up stairs. My GP recommended taking NSAID (Aleve, Ibuprofen) before exercising and trying not to favor either side. It seemed to get better after that.

No issues for about five years but then it started to happen randomly again (same knee). Taking NSAIDs and focusing on not favoring the good side seems to have made it better in only about a month this time.

No idea if there are any correlations to your situation but figured it wouldn't hurt to mention.

Appreciate the info. Medications haven’t really helped much. I’ll see what the ortho doc says

So in my current case, the tear has apparently exasperated early onset arthritis. Essentially, I have two problems. Make sure to ask about that as well if it is indeed a meniscus tear

Sounds like meniscus like others have said. I tore both of mine this year. Getting them scoped 6 weeks apart coming up here in a few weeks.

I had mine scoped about 8 weeks apart and they've both been great ever since. One knee gets "a little stuck" when getting up from kneeling at church from time to time but other than that, it's great. Running pain free is awesome.
