Seven weeks ago I suffered an avulsion fracture of my outside left ankle. It didn't require surgery but the doc put me in a boot and said no weight on the ankle for six weeks. On Monday he Xrayed and said the ankle has healed nicely, get out of the boot and crutches and take it easy building strength back in the ankle.

Here's the issue. My foot is still swollen and bruised. It's very painful to put weight on it especially around the ball of my foot (all across the foot). The Doc did an Xray of the while foot just to check and there are no other broken bones. He seemed like he didn't have an answer, just offered me
PT. Has anyone seen this or experienced this? Is it normal healing process? Any reason the foot would still be swollen when the fracture has healed?

ETA: The worst swelling is the top of my foot just below the toes. Both ankles (inside and out) are slightly swollen also. I have still have a bruise the size of a silver dollar on the bottom of my foot and some slight discoloration throughout the foot.

swelling likely due to inactivity. keep it elevated and start performing some ankle pumps. lower extremities depend on muscle pump of your leg musculature to get rid of swelling and since you've basically been stuck in neutral position for 6 weeks you are accumulating swelling. get to PT asap and they'll get ya straightened out.

It’s not just going to come out of the boot perfect. It’s weak and stiff and tissues can still be inflamed. Go to PT.
