After I run 2-3 miles or do any workout I smell a strong ammonia smell in my nose. My wife (no pics) says she can’t smell it on me.

I do try to keep carbs under 50g a day, take a multi, magnesium, b12, and creatine.

Is this my body burning muscle protein? Any suggestions to stop it?

Short answer, yes.

Raise carbs imo. That’s way low

I get it with my allergies. It only comes when I work out or get my heart rate going

A) based on what?
And
B) raising carbs will get rid of ammonia smell?

I've run 26 miles in 24 hours in deep ketosis and never smelled ammonia.

The keto breath stuff I suppose could have an ammonia smell for some. But it keto breath goes away.

I'm confused about the conclusion that raising carbs over "way low" 50g (assume net fiber) is helpful.

Because if you can run 26 miles and are somehow scared or 150 grams or even 200 of good carbs, you may need to try upping it and see how it goes. Carbs in general may not be great , especially junk like sugar, but people running multiple miles and working out will burn the carbs off and be fine.

It's not your muscle protein directly, it's the high protein diet you are consuming. It's common, wouldn't worry

that's not how it works

From your article:

quote:

The big takeaway here is that ammonia-scented sweat is not normal or healthy. “If you’re smelling ammonia in sweat, something’s wrong,” Maharam says.

Absolutely absurd. And why does he say you switch from carb-derived energy to protein-derived? What about fat?

quote:

“Balance is the key to health, especially when it comes to what you’re eating,” he adds. “Going to the extreme of all protein or all fat or all carbs…none of those is good for you.”

"Balancing" your diet with things you don't need (and that are likely detrimental) is the definition of "extreme".

TIME is the king of mindless appeals to conventional wisdom.
