100 mile strategies

Got my first 100miler next weekend (children of the cane). I am considering leaving my gps off and relying solely on HR for pacing. Throughout training I’ve focused on keeping my HR under 150 for long and easy runs. I know and understand the saying “nothing new on race day” however my watch will not last the duration of the 100 in gps mode. I also feel like this can simplify my strategy and give me less factors to worry about. Am I wrong in this line of thinking? As race day approaches I sometimes start to over analyze everything haha.

I usually use Waze when I drive that far

nothing new on race day
If you're tinkering with a new idea, start workshopping now.
Turn GPS on and off throughout the day to see how it affects battery life.

I have no experience with a race that long.
I will say that when I’ve focused solely on HR and a slow pace that I get mentally fatigued faster. Something about running a mile slower than I was expecting makes the overall run feel long. I would hate to have that creep up in a ultramarathon.

What’s the farthest you’ve run? That has to be a crazy mental battle.

At 50 calories per mile, you can expect to burn at least 5000 calories. Just pack an extra large Krewe pizza from Rotolo's, a 2 liter of Coke, and maybe a dozen donuts. Should be good to go. Godspeed!

Done several 100k. I’ve been training towards this 100miler and I’ve raced my most recent 100k as if it were a 100 miler. My nutrition strategy is dialed in I’m just trying to deal with the mental gymnastics at this point

What? I burn like 110 calories per mile. What are you 85 pounds?

235 lbs. Google said 50 to 60 calories per mile. I feel like I burn that brushing my teeth.

Easter, I’m 235-240 as well. My good friend I run with (165lbs) thinks it’s crazy how much I eat during ultras. I tell people that’s why I keep signing up for them. Just running from one buffet to another haha
