Youth summer golf camps

Looking to get my 8 year old in a golf camp this summer. Any recommendations for a golf camp for beginners in the Baton Rouge area?

The Island hosts a summer camp for kids. They have several date options. Our kids have gone and they love it.

The Island (though may not be close for BR)
I think Pelican Point and UClub do one (not sure if non-members allowed)
First Tee EBR does a few sessions at Clark and Santa Maria (maybe Beaver too)

Group camps are the absolute worst way to get any kid into golf way too much down time and it’s not basketball- a kid needs to be able to consistently make solid contact. I would invest heavily in individual lessons with the best coach in your area… it makes a tremendous difference

I did the group pga camp last year for my 8 year old. From an improvement standpoint if was a total waste of time, he didn't learn anything. He did enjoy it thoroughly.
I would think about what your trying to accomplish.
1) are you just trying to give him something to do
2) trying to get him hooked on golf
3) wanting him to advance and learn
PGA camps are good for the first two
If he is wanting to gain skill and knowledge, I would find him a one on one camp and roll with it. My son has been taking lessons and starting tournaments since last year. He is hooked and loves it. Told me he didn't want to do the PGA camp again. He loves the training and tournaments

I agree with Roach.
Put my daughter in 1st Tee at Santa Maria for her first ever camp/lesson at age 6. Prior to that was just she & I at the chipping/putting green a handful of times. That camp was perfect for introductory to go over course etiquette, entry level respect for the game, decent club grip and pretty good training methods for a 6 year old beginner.
Pelican Point's the following year was much better. Slightly smaller groups, better quality program structure with drive/chip/putt event a little team scramble. Coach's were better also, both in regards to the individual time & tips for each kid as well as engaging the kids & being able to command their attention and interest. This is not a knock on 1st Tee at all, just that Pelican was better which I expected it would be as a member club compared to public.
I will be looking into lessons for her and new clubs soon to take it up a notch since she is still liking it so far.

I will have an opinion in a few months. My daughter (13) first swung a club last September. I pulled my son’s old junior clubs out of storage just to see how she swung since they fit her size. I kind of got wide eyed because I wasn’t expecting what I saw. Her middle school had golf team tryouts later that week and I told her she should try out. Didn’t have time for lining up a lesson beforehand so I just did the best I could with some basics. She made the team and ended up low medalist in the league championship about 8 weeks later. Shot a 51 over 9 holes. She wasn’t playing against great competition (24 middle school girls from 6 area schools)but it was a nice accomplishment for a girl who only picked up a club for the first time 8 weeks prior. She has since had 15 lessons and just started on a spring Junior tour.
She is also already registered for 10 summer tournaments and I have a week carved out for a Nike 5 day camp in July that she is going to attend. I don’t know what to expect. She is kind of a range rat when not doing her weekly dance and cheer obligations and I can’t imagine the camp will be detrimental. Just don’t know how much she will get from it except maybe making some new golf friends. We will see soon enough.
