Your experience…private vs public courses

I’ve always floated around the public course scene, but my location has gotten out of hand. Too crowded, hackers everywhere, etc. Typically we get paird up with a random super slow, bad player.
Is it worth joining a private course? Money isn’t the option just never really had a reason too until now. Currently paying 60-70 bucks walking into a glorified goat ranch with unknown hackers.
Who’s been here and is it worth a little extra?

It really depends on the public course.
Goat ranch or decent public course

It sounds like private would be a better option for you. If you can afford it, being a member of a club is nice especially if there are amenities for the family, a good bar & grill, and a strong MGA.

This has been my holdup with a young family in the burbs of Houston. I grew up in the burbs of New Orleans. We were members of the clubs because my dad golfed, my mom played tennis, and the kids used the pool. It made sense. Now, we have a pool in our backyard, and all of these neighborhoods have multiple pools, tennis courts, etc. I'm having a hard time justifying the expense when the amenities are not needed.
I'm really hoping my 18 month old son eventually gets into golf so it makes sense. At the moment, I'm only able to play every other week and it doesn't seem crazy even spending $250 a month on golf if I play a couple of nice courses. However, I dream of the day I take him to play 9 a couple times after school during the week and getting 18 in on the weekend.

I live east of Memphis and the public golf scene here sucks. So it was a no-brainer to join a club. I was at Spring Creek Ranch (which is an awesome course/club) but its only golf and dining. My family hated it. We moved to Ridgeway Country Club and it's been awesome. Great events hosted by the club. Great pool during the summer. Lots of member events. A great Member Guest tourney. Well worth it to me and my family.

Really depends on the Club and the members.
I was a member at Fort Bend CC in Tx for 12 years and it was awesome until it was sold for housing. Great tournaments, cookouts, etc..
Then we joined Sweetwater CC for 2 years and hated it most of the time.
Now just play all over using GolfNow.

I was at a similar place, but the public options where I live until my wife asked me after one round. Why are you even playing golf, do you even have fun anymore?
It really made me think why was I wasting my time to not enjoy myself doing an activity that I love doing so we went private the only regret I have is that I didn’t do it years ago.

If money is not an option, private is the way to go IMO. I bit the bullet a couple of years ago and haven't looked back. I haven't yet scoffed at writing the check each month.
Great if you have kids even if they only seldom play. The ability to go out on a Friday/Saturday afternoon with them is not something I would be able to do w/out the membership and really value when it happens.

If you hate slow play most private courses don’t have that. Most.
I liked having my clubs in storage at the course. When I played they were waiting for me on a cart.
Also nice to have a legit handicap and manicured golf course to play on. I did not like assessments. Every time a new board would come in their wives would try to redo some bullshite thing that we didn’t need. I’ve been assessed 5 or 6 times for mostly wasteful things.
