Let’s say we hit it the same length.

That’s about the same yardage for me but I typically play the whites at my course, around 6400 and it’s not too bad. I do play the next closest from time to time and do score better.

I don’t carry a 5 iron.

I enjoy about 6000 yards.
Unfortunately, I still have some fairway woods into par 4s, and I have not reached a par 5 in two this year.

I’m trying to do some strength and flexibility training. I’m working on the swing with a pro, but I think I probably will need to move up again in 5 years or so.

I’m old, fairly new to the game and just not very good. I play red when by myself. I play whatever tee everyone else is when in a group. However, I don’t have an ego and I’ll pick it up.

There is a group of Asian guys in thier 40's that play the tips every time here at Greatwood.

I watched them, thier best hitter may drive the ball 200 yards.

I don't see how playing 6800 yards is fun for them.

Whites on the Judge, which is my favorite of the 18’s there is 6120.

With a perfect drive I can reach 15 in 2, isn’t smart to try and bite off that much of the corner. Much better to hit 1-iron, 7 iron, wedge.

Do you think a verified handicap, 5 or better, should be required to play the tips?

Drives me nuts. I know my limits and I don't want to shoot big numbers.
I'm fine playing from 6200 or less as a 10.
I have played well at 6600, but it was a good year/day and I was down to a 6.

The sign at Beth Page black says something like “unless you are a highly skilled tournament golfer, please play the appropriate forward tee.”

I’ll try to find the quote

It actually states:
("WARNING: The Black Course Is An Extremely Difficult Course Which We Recommend Only For Highly Skilled Golfers")

Not all tips are the same, but no, not at all. I'm a 3.5 and I play the tips half the time at my home course and the one ups the other half. Playing the one ups for the most part is much more enjoyable, and the tips are a grind. There are courses in town that's tips are shorter than the one ups at other places. Then you have courses that there's just a few hundred yard difference in their tees while others have 600+ yards in between the one ups and tips. You can't treat every course the same.

The large portion of golfers play the wrong tees. It's especially common for younger guys to play the wrong tees. I see very mediocre guys playing the tips fairly often and the two places I play the most.

quote:

99% of PGA and LPGA professionals we surveyed believe that golfers have a better experience when they play tees that fit their ability.

93% of that same group of professionals also said it is “extremely common” or “somewhat common” for golfers to choose tees that are too long for their ability. This belief is supported by survey data from golfers, analysis of USGA score posting data and anecdotal experience.

Wish I had an answer to that.. We got stuck behind some dinguses at Pelican the other day playing from the tips and none of their drives got beyond the 200 yard marker..

A lot depends on if the course has a lot of forced carries or not.

Before Memorial Park was redone, there were lots of old guys that would hit a driver in the fairway, then hit a fairway wood to the edge of the green, then chip inside 5 feet and make the putt.

They could do that all day long.

No. I’m a verified 4 from the whites.

From the tips on the Judge, three of the 4 par 5’s I can’t reach in 3 shots just from a distance standpoint. One I can’t reach the fairway over the water from the tee. One I probably can’t reach in 4 shots given my tee shot can’t reach the fairway and I’d have to hack it out of the rough. Figure a 7 average there, that’s 28 shots.

1 par 4 I’d have to lay up to one of the up tees to be able to clear the water

5, probably 6 par 4’s I can’t reach in 2 including that one. Figure a 5.5 average there, that’s 55 shots.

3 par 3’s I’d have to hit driver on, one a 3-wood. Average on par 3’s would be at least 5. There’s 20 shots right there.

In short, I couldn’t break 90 from the tips, probably would be pushing it trying to break 100 from all the penalty shots. I just don’t hit it far enough and it’s impossible for that to change.

One rule of thumb is to multiply your 5-iron carry distance by 36.

This checks out. 6500 yards give or take 200 is where I gravitate to.

It's called Accuflex shafts.

I never would have believed that this guy at our course could pick up 20 plus yards with his driver, but it's true.

It took him about a week to get the timing down with the shaft, but now he hits it straight and much longer.

I hit my 5 iron 200. I would get crushed on a 7200 yard course. Would shoot well into the 90s as a 10hc

Apparently you’re never too stupid to read about the back surgery or the arthritis.

Has he had back surgery and arthritis?

In his sixties? Seventies? How far is 20 yards further?

I hit it straight, draw it, fade it on command. Lost 50 yards off the tee after surgery, if you haven’t had it, you really just don’t know.

Then there’s the whole getting old that goes with it. I play with a bunch of guys my age or older, I’m the best player in the group that hits it the furthest.

Edit- I looked at the shaft I got in the driver I just bought. We went through a lot of shafts (got a professional fitting) and this is the one that worked best.

Aldila Ascent red 50 stiff.
