When to move on from game improvement irons?

In the middle of lessons and I'm looking to possibly upgrade my clubs after a fitting early summer. I currently play Callaway rogues which are considered game improvement irons. I still have a ways to go with path and compression(i launch the the ball way too high 6-8 degrees.) I'm shooting decent scores 90's occasionally in the upper 80's thanks to a solid short game. When did you guys make the move from game improvement to player distance or player irons. Looking at the Srixon zx5 or zx7.
Seems like if i'm willing to put in the work it could be a good idea. Am i wrong?

I know scratch golfer who play game improvement irons. It’s not a skill level. It’s what fits your swing.

It’s really more about comfort and fit. I like clubs with a thin sole and thin top line. If you like your clubs there’s no reason to change. Also if you want new irons get them.

The best golfer I ever used to play with played game improvement clubs.
Dude was a plus handicap.

Maybe never, the point of them is to have a more forgiving mishits and make it easier to get the ball in the air. This could just be a weakpoint in your game even if you are a scratch golfer. The only reason to move away is if you are hitting the ball too high into the air, or REALLY want the ability to shape shots, but no longer need the bigger face for mishits.

ZX5s and be done with it.
Club Champion guy told me they're the best all around clubs he's probably ever fitted on guys. Says he has a ton of scratch golfers playing them because of forgiveness while retaining significant spin and workability.

If you have the desire to be able to shape your ball flight, or prefer the softer feel of forged clubs. I have a couple sets of forged cavity backs, Titleist CB’s & Callaway Apex irons that I play interchangeably. I prefer the more compact head, and thin top line to the bulkier game improvement iron. But, I probably give a few strokes back to par every round because of it...

I'm interested in the Player Distance for a couple reasons. One I flight the ball incredibly high, part of that is poor compression mechanics that i'm still working on. Two, the increased feedback with a better club. I practice an hour or so a day and with a GI iron its really hard to tell the difference between a good and bad shot. third, I pull the ball a little attempting a draw and from reading it seems like a player distance iron would help that a little due to a smaller offset.
