The Yips

I wanted to get more lateral force and learn to use the ground for more power. Watched a lot of YouTube videos and tried tinkering with my swing. Now I’m hitting the ball very thin, I feel very stiff in my swing and my club head speed has dropped about 8mph. I was striking the ball very well before just wanted to improve my swing. Have a lesson tomorrow to try and fix whatever it is I did. Crazy how after a few weeks of changing you can’t just go back to how you were swinging before. Golf is a great game but it’s so frustrating at times lol.

I’m confused with your title

I meant I have a case of the yips. I’ve suddenly lost the ability to hit a golf ball and I feel very stiff in my swing.

I usually find when I’m hitting shanks while working on something new that I’m really close to playing good golf.
You’re probably exaggerating slightly what you need to be feeling. Your coach should be able to clean you up.

Doesn’t compute. Ground force is mostly vertical. Excessive lateral movement causes low point control issues, thus the thins.

I was able to diagnose the root cause of your symptoms

Absolutely my biggest mistake. I wasn’t just watching any YouTuber. Mainly Michael Breed and Peter Finch. But now I feel completely lost when I swing. Next time I want to change something going to just schedule a lesson. Trying to figure it out on your own is not worth it.

You look at a guy like Scheffler who has almost 7” of lateral movement in his hips at impact and he’s pushing up vertical from the ground. Obviously I’m not wanting to make such a massive lateral move nor am I trying to mimic his swing just trying to get some force. I’ve stopped moving my hips towards the target and still thinning it. I’ll flush a few shots in a row then I’ll start hitting it thin again, then I get frustrated and then I swing even worse. Golf just doesn’t love us back the same way we love it.

I just got over this with my scoring irons. Relax your shoulders and drop it in the slot. Get to the left side!

You just described my day. Gonna work out the issue on the range tomorrow (hopefully).

The thing that changed my swing completely is right elbow tight and left wrist bowed and not cupped. You aren’t picking the ball up, but keeping the hands forward at impact and rotating through. Many times trying something new you are trying to slow down at the ball and be perfect. Don’t…

Go out to the range and stand tall to the ball. You probably standing too far away due to added flex in your legs in order to "generate more power and elevate."
Stand uncomfortably close and bend the knees just enough to take the stiffness out and try hitting 3/4 shots.
