Surprising Range work and launch monitor results ( Correction ! )
Product Correction - The irons are the JPX HM 921 irons and not the regular 921s. Sorry for the confusion.

Most know on here that I am a Ping guy. But I have been wanting to build a second bag.

This morning I tried the JPX HM 921 Irons with the KBS tour 105 stiff shafts. My Ping G410 irons have the same shafts.

Range work , the ballfight was very similar, but My Pings seemed to go about 5 yards longer hitting nothing but 7 irons.

So we went to the PGA Superstore and got on the launch monitor. There I hit the JPX 921 and the JPX 921 tours against my Pings.

Ping G410 7 iron - Carry avg 164
JPX HM 921 7 iron - Carry avg 158
JPX HM 921 Tours - Carry avg 162

All clubs has the KBS Tour 105 shafts, ball speed was always higher with the Pings and my dispersion was tighter with the Pings.

With that , I decided not to drop a grand on the Mizuno's even though they are great looking.

Will probably wait on the new Srixon models , but it may be February before they are out.

Will also try to get a demo Sub 70 iron too.

I am still surprised by the results, thought sure that I was walking out with the Mizuno.

Why go with a second bag of different clubs?

It's the difference of lofts. Your Pings are stronger lofted

True and we discussed that, but on average, I hit the Pings slighty higher than the 921's.

Partly because I like new gear and maybe a little bordem because of covid and being retired .

I had an big Australian trip planned for this summer and of course that was canceled.

Now the wife would rather split the 25 grand, she takes half to get new granite countertops and I am spending my half on golf, new Glocks and bbq pits, etc....

My wife and I were never able to have kids, so Golf is my only hobby now.

And of course, whenever Covid is done, I will still have to spring for a big trip....

That's how game improvement irons are designed. You should be comparing the ping 8i to the mizuno 7i.

The JPX HM 921 is game improvement too.

And thier claim is increased distance.

To be clear, the 921s are beautiful irons, much better looking than my pings.

Maybe I had high expectations, but the 921s are a great club.

I'm still confused. Why are you going with a second bag of a different brand of essentially the same style club.

Go to a players iron for the second set.

Or spend big money and get fit and get the best clubs you could possibly get.

When you say the 921 do you mean the 921 forged? Sorry if that’s a dumb question

Comparison is apples to oranges, Bop. Ping i210 would be better comp. 410s are distance irons for the ultimate forgiveness factor. Designed for the hackers (not saying good players can’t play them).

Srixon is going to fair similarly as the Mizunos did. The fact that you saw such minimal distance differences is impressive. Mizuno is winner here Imo

It's pretty understood/well known Mizuno's aren't there for distance.

All about the feel and the look.

Granted they made big efforts to improve their distance numbers on the 921 vs 919 but that has never been their goal.

Bruh..... if you’re a gear junky, you need to learn to be a gear junky. Two completely different irons and lofts.

The only game improvement mizuno has to my knowledge is the hot metals. Forged is a players distance which is more forgiving than the tours (name kind of spells it out)

I have never been that familiar with Mizuno Golf products in the past so sorry for the confusion, I was being too generic.

I am speaking about the JPX 921 Hot Metal Irons, the regular and the Tour in my comparisons and I will correct my original posting, Thanks.

Their Company verbiage is :

KEY FEATURES OF THE MIZUNO JPX 291 HOT METAL IRONS:

Pairs Mizuno®'s fastest ever ball speeds with a straight, stable flight and controlled landing angles
3rd generation of Mizuno irons to utilize the strength of Chromoly
The most complex face geometry to date for additional energy from the clubface
Brand : Mizuno

I will say that the Ping G410 for me is not nearly as forgiving as the G400 model was. The G410 is more compact than the G400 .

Side by side the JPX HM921 appears larger than my G410 also.

Now that it is known they were the HM irons, are the results even more surprising to you ?

Again sorry for not including the HM designation to my original posting.

Why does everyone obsess over loft do much? The COG is different, so launch angle and spin is the same or better.

I don't understand the obsession for the club degree as opposed to the launch angle.. He is still hitting a same number iron higher and longer

I am 65

Hopefully you will live that long and still be playing after a broken neck and a knee replacement.

On the course I am usually around 163 or so. Certainly not up to your standards.

But at 50 years old, I did win the Senior South Texas ReMax long drive with a drive of 346 in play using a Bang head at sea level.

But that was before the fused discs in the spine.

If you are hitting the hot metal shorter than the tours, then you have a shaft problem. The tours generate more spin per degree of launch than the HM and need a different shaft.

And Mizuno has always been more conservative on their lofts compared to ther brands, especially on their blades. They haven't played the launch monitor game with jacking up lofts to win the 7 iron distance competition.
