I’m pretty new to golf, a lot of my buddies play and I got a pretty cheap set of clubs to start learning with. I was thinking about getting some lessons but was wondering if y’all had any thoughts or suggestions on if that’s a good idea or not

Sorry, I wasn’t sure how specific to get. Lessons seem to be rather expensive so I was just curious what’s about normal

Just looking for tips or suggestions that some of y’all might have for a beginner, anything y’all wish y’all had done when you first started

If your serious about it I’d say go get some lessons to help practice good habits. Will be harder to break those bad habits later if you decide to take lessons on a year or something

What you need to do is a full bag fitting for brand new equipment. Maybe wait a few months for the new 2022 clubs to drop. Spend maybe $3k on all the latest and greatest.
Kidding, of course. Lessons are always the place to start. Better to get a good swing path from the beginning than to start off with a ton of bad habits

Get in a ton of range time if you can. Have someone who at least has a vague understanding of the golf swing help you. Focus on strike. It's really all about the strike. Practice putting and chipping. Then when you can get the ball around decently get lessons.
Personally wouldn't get lessons until you can at least break 100ish. JMO

I think my general idea is I’m gonna go for a lesson this Saturday and just learn proper mechanics and hopefully put in a lot of range time in the coming weeks. With all this rain who knows if that’ll happen

Maybe get one on the fundamentals but I'd find a reputable coach that isn't going to try and teach you a whole swing. Find one that takes what you're working with and tweaks it a little for better results.

That’s not a bad way to start. Listen to what the pro has to say. Don’t be afraid of failure, because you will

Well I don’t really have much of a swing considering this past weekend was the second time I’ve ever picked up a set of clubs lol. So I’m hoping maybe he can get me on the right path

Lessons are a great way to start, but it would be very helpful to you to know if you are standard specs or need something different.
There are some useful static fitting charts online.
It's really easy to groove a bad swing and it's hard as hell to get out of it.
Good luck and welcome to the game of a lifetime.

Nothing wrong with getting lessons now since you are just starting out. You won’t be left with bad habits that will create a lot issues later on. Sure wish I would have gotten lessons to start out, would have saved me some frustration for sure. Once you’re done with a few lessons and got the basics down, I would say go get properly fitted. That way you are using the good habits you’ve picked up on, with a set of clubs that are fit for your swing. You will likely save years of frustration and a ton of money in the end.

Take a lesson or two, read ben hogans five lessons of golf.

Get some basic mechanics from lessons. If you get started with proper grip, ball placement in your stance, and a repeatable swing from the start, the game will be a ton more enjoyable for a long time.
I'd also suggest you not look at the trillions of swing tips and click bait YouTube swing tips. It's overload, especially just starting. Checkout sidekick golf's 5 or 6 videos on breaking 100. He's quirky but dead on.

Get a lesson(s) ASAP IMO. The longer you mess around the more bad habits you’ll have to unlearn
