Anybody know what Santa Maria has decided to do with their driving range? There is about a 3.5'-4' wide (the length of the range) slab of concrete poured towards the back of their driving range. With the amount of abuse their range took, I hope they aren't going to hitting off of mats. It was always a miracle to find a good piece of ground to hit off of no matter where they placed the range ropes. If it isn't hitting mats, they just reduced the amount of hitting area by a good 20'deep because I don't see them putting the ropes behind this concreted area.

Hopefully they’re installing cool zone fans.

They're installing a mat. That's good thing because their range is in rough shape right now.

ETA: this is the same thing the oaks at Sherwood did. Put everyone on the mats when they were repairing the grass.

Their range is always in rough shape. I understand it gets alot of use but people need to learn how to control their divots during a range session and not take one then 2'over take another. Also when the range is closed during certain hours for "maintenance", how about do some maintenance(level out the teeing area, move range ropes, sand the previous hitting areas, replace brush buckets...)

I know they do maintenance but it's just not often enough. They can do better. I've seen the divots people take and how spread out they are, but they can still do a better job leveling out the surface. I think that's part of the mat's purpose, to take some stress off the grass now and then.

Those mats on ranges get me so crunk before I go play a round. I hit them so pure. Then get on the course and it is a shiteshow.

How much does the range cost if I just want to practice?

How's the practice green(s)?

Also, what makes Santa Maria hotter than the LSU range?

$5 for a small bucket(30 balls) $7 for a medium(60 balls) $10 for large(90 balls).

The practice green is really big and has 7 or 8 holes. The green condition is pretty damn fast and really smooth right now. It gives you putts to practice from no break to a lot of break. Plus there's a chipping and putting green right behind the driving range and another chipping and pitching area w/ 2 bunkers to the right of the range. (You can practice shots from up to 100 yds out.

LSU has a bigger range but it's bumpier than SM and not as level (which is saying a lot). The practice green on the right of the range is pretty good but the putting green on the side of the clubhouse is tiny. The upside, however, is it's cheaper to practice there. Only $7 for a large bucket.

Yeah I've gone twice recently, and enjoyed putting on the practice green, which was fairly smooth. That bunker has always been a lake though!

So I could theoretically go chip, put, and hit 100 yd shots at Santa Maria for free??

Yup, and depending on the time of day I go, if there are a ton of balls on the chipping and pitching green and it's gonna get dark soon, i'll take half of those and bring em to the range and get a good 30-50 swings in.

Except right now unless you enjoy being swarmed by gnats, they are unbelievable out there right now.

They also close the range at 5 on Wednesdays to pick up the balls, which I found really weird.

They probably mow the range on Thursday mornings, so they have to pick it 100% clean, lots of places do this on the night before mowing
