I’ll bet if you go back and track Tigers shots on 12 on Sunday for the last 20 years they’ll all be within a few yards of where he hit it this year. There are probably outliers, but that’s the smart play. There are birdies and eagles out there on future holes.

Played it twice. Birdie/par. 7 iron. The par was out of the back trap. At Tour 18 from the tips. Ho hum hole.

That green between the bunkers is like 20 feet long. There’s not a whole lot of space to land it there. Think Tiger actually pulled his ball a little bit which gave it some more distance and put it on the green.

That hole was playing absurdly long for the last couple groups because of the wind.

They interviewed Finau today

He said he was aiming for the middle of the green. But the wind was coming out the left the last 30 minutes which makes that hole almost impossible. He said he pushed his ball maybe only a foot, but with the wind out of the left in took off and went in the water

There is a reason 4/6 last golfers to play that hole went into the water. Thats 4 of the best/hottest golfers in the entire world at the time. That wind at the end made it almost unplayable

I don't disagree. It really commands a good shot. The two misses for a right handed player, long left and short right, bring all the trouble into play. That's the genius in the design of the hole, IMO.

absolutely.

There had to be a wind up there they were not feeling. Too many good players landing short in the same way with what sounded like flushed shots.

I agree with Faldo in that Molinari's looked a little off - like he wasn't fully committed. But Finau's was absolutely flushed no doubt about it.

I definitely think aiming in between the traps is the right play on Sunday. If Koepka aims there and comes up short he is in the front bunker, makes at worst four and is in a playoff if the same winning score holds. 12 is not the hole to take risks on Sunday if you are in contention

And, despite the fact that Tiger played it "safe," he still had lots of meat on the bone on his second putt on 12.
From where he was, that is not an automatic two-putt.

Pretty sure spieth is on record saying that he wasn't playing that well the year he collapsed, but his miss all week was short right. Which is generally a pretty good miss at Augusta except for No. 12.

Geoff Ogilvy stated it really well on the fried egg podcast. Said that even if you aim in between the bunkers, if you push it at all with a certain wind that ball is going to end up in the water. If you aim a hair left of the pin and pull it you’ll be fine.

It’s a really hard golf shot.

That's a beautiful golf hole.

I guess it proves that a good course design can challenge the world's best players without having to make the course 7800 yards

He grimaced a bit when he looked up. Wasn't sure if it was from the feel or from what he saw.
