I tend to grip the club too tightly at times and it kills distance.

Any good swing thoughts or tips for reducing tension?

If you know what you're doing is wrong, here's a tip, don't do it.

Just feel that club head in your hands before you swing.

I literally pretend like I am holding a stick of butter or a bird. I also exert very little "Grip and Rip" mentality. If you think slow is smooth, smooth is fast, you wont have to grip so tightly.

Man it is hard to trust this advice, but it works. I tried it this weekend and hit a ton of greens in regulation.

I have score cards where the front 9 are decent scores from feeling relaxed and swinging smoothly. Then I get confident and start hacking. It took me swinging on a launch monitor to see that the swings that were effortless were actually higher club head speeds... by like 4-5 mph.

Some say chewing gum helps. Relaxes you and relieves tension.

I can't do it though.

Keeping those nerves in check is tough for us weekend warriors. I try to just enjoy the scenery and think about anything but golf. Then, when its time to hit, pick a club and swing easy.

Music. I have Belinda Carlisle "circle in the sand" in my head when I get on the tee.

Focus more on the lyrics, just swing the club like I have a few million times. The body remembers how if you just get out of the way.
