You have $500 to spend on golf equipment. What are you buying?

My current bag:
Driver: Calloway Diablo 9 degree
Irons/wedges: King Cobra II (oversized)
Putter: Older center cut Ping

I know $500 probably won’t cover the full set but I’m leaning towards some new irons. Although I’m not sure what would be best for me as I’ve been playing with the oversized heads for over 10 years.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You can get some decent used irons in the 3-400 range and spend the rest on whatever

I'd go irons. Go hit different irons at a store and then pick what you like best. You could also look into getting fitted but I'm not sure how much that would add to the price.

Go hit some models in the store, and look on 3balls.com for the set you like. Got some great Mizuno's from that website in excellent condition for half the price if I got them new.

Are you fit for your driver? You could probably get a fitting and shaft upgrade if not. I think the fitting would be around $150 and shafts have different values depending on what you want. I'd start there and see what you have left. If your driver isn't optimized, you're costing yourself more strokes than you think.

James Leitz in Hammond is a GD Top 100 Club fitter and instructor. Has trackman, etc..

Irons are tricky, I would not replace a set with a new set (no matter how much I'm spending on them) before getting fitted, or at least knowing my lie angle.

Do you hit your current set well? Do you hit your driver well? I'd figure out what you're weakness is and apply the $500 to fixing that.

That would cover most of my new driver with upgraded shaft.

If went into the store, would they tell me that? Or is that part of the whole club fitting process?

Tell you what, lie angle? Yes, that's part of the club fitting process. Unless you're really tall or short standard length is fine. Lie angle and shaft flex are what I'd zero in on.

Can probably get a set of irons that’s a couple years old in good shape for 300. Spend 200 on a newer used driver.

Get some used irons, plenty of good options for $500 and less. I got a full set of used Taylormade RSi2’s for $360 at Golfsmith in Houston.

Titleist AP1 4-pw, aw $299

Taylormade M1 $165

Both would be a big upgrade in technology. Used, but good condition and for under $500 total
