Thinking of picking up golf as a new hobby. I’ll probably spend more time at the driving range than actually playing.

Any good starter club sets for around $500?

Can’t belive I’m recommending this but BombTech golf has a complete set, Woods included for a low price. They look forgiving and helps out a smaller mom and Pop biz

At some level, you need to know how powerful and fast your swing is on full shots.

The flex of the shaft needs to be stiffer for fast, powerful swings. For wedges, most of the shafts are similar for most players because you are not usually swinging full.

I would go to a golf shop and ask to look at demo clubs or even used clubs.

Go buy a seven iron and start hitting the range. Once you can hit it good more times than bad get the rest of the set.

And get a putter. And mat if you don’t have a practice green you can use at the range.

Are you opposed to used? If not, try to pick up a full set off of Facebook marketplace or eBay. For the most part, the bigger the head, the more forgiving the iron is. I am a big fan of the Ping G (10,15,20,25,30,max) series of irons. You can self fit yourself on their website and then try to find clubs close to those specs using the color dot system. I am also a supporter of the TaylorMade burner irons. Driver technology really hasn't changed that much in the last 6-8 years, so I'd try to go hit some used stuff at Edwin Watts. For a beginner, look at TaylorMade ATV wedges. Find whatever putter you can with left over budget.

Putter should be first on the upgrade list when you decide you want to stick with the sport. But I see decent sets on Facebook all the time for sub $400. I've pieced together many a set for buddies for under $500. If you go the eBay route, I've had great success with "making offers>" Also, combo listings are a good way to normal grab a few clubs for cheap. See first eBay link I posted. Essentially a free putter.

G10 irons + odyssey putte for $150
Driver, FW, and hybrid for $125
ATV wedge set (of 2) $75

Callaway has a nice starter set. Go hit the starter sets at an Edwin Watts and see what you make good contact with. I was set on Ping until I hit a few clubs over and over.

Your body determines the choice.
Start with stretching.
The argentine masters champ angel cabrera has a youtube. Do it. 3 4 times a week

go to range and get strong enough to hit a big basket without losing control. Start with small basket for a month. Go 2, 3 times a week. Take 30 seconds between shots.
PSA:driver, hit smooth and easy, not big hard macho. This is mandatory for beginners. Easy and smooth. I promise.
Your physique will guide store to fit you.
Key to learning anything:
Practice.
A coach.
Pay local pro.
Get a lesson every couple months.
You can look at youtubes but coach will make huge difference first three years.

Used ping g15s,20s, etc.

I love my G15s I don't know when I would consider replacing them. When I switched from a couple different hand me downs to the pings my game certainly improved.

You’ll want to start with clubs in the “game improvement” category.

Don’t buy used, but a model year or two older. Every brand has their game improvement entry line. Look up reviews and ranking for previous years and go from there.

For your budget, Wilson Staff D200 would be a great full line to look at.
