I played the PGA West stadium course and the Nicklaus course and enjoyed both of them. I also played the Mountain Course at La Quinta and that was also nice. It's been a few years, but I'd rank them Stadium, Nicklaus, and Mountain as far as difficulty, overall condition. I think the Mountain course was the cheapest. I played in May and it was above 100 degrees, but it didn't really feel that hot.

I just got back from there in March. Played the PGA West stadium and the the La Quinta mountain courses in hellacious winds. Courses were good but impossible due to wind and firm greens. I would love to play them in less wind.

We also played Indian Wells Celebrity course which was nice as well as Desert Willow Firecliff which were both in excellent conditions and fun to play.

Just know what you’re getting into if you play the Dye courses as they are challenging.

Are the courses the two of you listed above playable by public/non-resort guests?

The PGA West courses I played are public. I was staying at La Quinta, but I don't think you have to be a guest to play the courses there. There's a wealth of courses in the area, so you won't have any problem finding good courses to play.

Played a bunch of courses there. My favorite courses there are both Desert Willow courses.

Which one's easier for hackers? Mountainview or Firecliff?

I don't completely suck, but one or two of the guys with us will be lucky to break 100

We stayed at an airbnb. So no worries about staying at resort. I would stay away from the PGA West courses unless you really wanna play the course they have the tourney on.

The mountain course is pretty cool. Indian wells was nice and I think everyone would enjoy it. I have also played Silverrock in the past and thats a cool course right alongside the mtn.

Desert willow firecliff is the more challenging of the two, but I wouldnt call it overly tough.

I played the two courses at
Desert Willow and both were very nice. Heritage Palms, Indian Wells, and PGA West are on my list.

I don’t remember. You can check the slope ratings of each. But there are plenty of tee options. I played the up tees with my older uncle. Probably played less than 6000. I don’t find the courses to be overly difficult. We also played both Pete dye PGA courses and I do not like the elevated greens. Desert Willow is not like that.

I only played the Firecliff. The fairways are pretty generous on most holes from what I remember. There is some penalizing desert areas, buts they give you about as much fairway and rough as to be expected at any course that’s not completely wide open. You can see a couple of the Mountainside holes on the drive in and one of them looked pretty tight. That’s not really a good indicator of the entire course, I’m sure, but that’s all I could see.

Neither is particularly 'easy', but Firecliff is tighter and more challenging than Mountain View.

My buddy ended up booking us a tee time at Escena Gold Club in Palm Springs.

Have you played there?

Looks decent.
