Ownership of the Bluffs

It is a shame that such a beautiful piece of property can never be (even close) maintained to what the golfers in this area wish it was. I’m sure there are folks on here in the know. The latest story I’ve heard (and I don’t know shite) is that the homeowners bought it and now are trying to flip it.
My question to the knowledgeable of this board is has it been discussed about selling the course to the parish? St. Francisville is growing with a lot of Baton Rouge folks moving there. The course will never be a money maker. Why not have the place helped out with tax money?
Hell, pitch it to both parishes. It‘a on the border. Cause unless the place has an owner who doesn’t mind pissing away some money on a yearly basis, it just can’t be kept to expectations.
Is this just nonsense?

It's in the right owners' hands right now, I think. The homeowners have half million dollar houses in a neighborhood in the middle of nowhere. The reason they live there is because of the golf course. They are the group with the most incentive to keep it open and make it nice.
It needs to get back to being a well manicured, expensive course. It needs to be hosting State Am qualifiers, etc. The homeowners seem to be willing and interested in making it a good course again.

How big of a population is needed. St Mary does it with about 60,000. Of course I don’t the condition of their course either.

It has potential and as the previous poster stated, the right people own it now.
The course should be one of the premier courses in Louisiana.
Think of all the amateur and junior golf events played there in the past.
No reason that the LGA, SGA, SJGT, AJGA, etc type tournaments should not be playing there in a couple of years.

All those tournaments you listed are great to have. But those tournaments don’t pay the bills. They’re just high name tournaments. If the right people today means they want the place to be stellar, that’s great. But stellar cost money. And at the Bluffs, that’s a ton of money to get it back in shape. Money their probably not gonna see back. It can be beautiful, but it’s not gonna make money.

It needs to be about 15 miles closer to BR

Okay, then let’s move it 15 miles closer to BR......
Or.....find a model to sustain the livelihood of the course. A premier expensive round ain’t gonna work. Didn’t work before they closed the first time.
Y’all remember when it was number 1 in state and a top 100 in the nation? Still closed. Couldn’t pay the bills.

The Bluffs has never made the Golf Digest 100 Greatest Course in the United States. There has been only one course in Louisiana to ever make that list. Would you like to take a guess which course?

The Bluffs was in the top 100 best public golf courses. I didn’t say which publication. But that’s not really the topic here. It’s how to keep it manageable and meet expectations. You want to talk about that, fine. You want to argue some frivolous stats....why?
Posted on 10/11/19 at 7:49 pm to BonesMalone
Not here to argue. I am clearing up a misconception that you stated. The Bluffs was in the Top 100 courses you can play. Not the Top 100 courses in the United States. I agree with you. It is a fine course and should be maintained.

I’m with you about being maintained. But that’s the whole conundrum of the place: the one time it was receiving accolades, it went bankrupt.
It did have an owner at one time that didn’t mind the loss every year. But he got tired of it, sold it to a crook and the property has been spiraling ever since.
The public is expecting Augusta. You can’t achieve that at the Bluffs and turn a profit. 30 years the place has been open......ZERO profit.
Excluding a nine hole course in Angola and Clinton, its the only show in town. Why not sell to both parishes?

There are 4 courses I think of in similar positions:
The Bluffs
Beau Pre
Quail Hollow
Money Hill
All beautiful layouts. Massive properties. Out in the middle of nowhere. 3 are always hurting. The last just can’t seem to turn the corner, but always had the financial backing.
I hate what BREC does sometimes, but those 3 courses above need to be managed with tax money in some way.

The Bluffs just needs to continue to make slow and steady improvements. Like Copper Mill, people will support it if it is moving in right direction. The Bluffs doesn’t need to worry about being top course or what non-paying tournaments play there. Just slow and steady improvement and people are dying to come back out there again. I am rooting for them. I love that course.
Taxpayers are not funding it.

I doubt East Feliciana could afford the Clinton nine hole.
Golf destinations can work, but it has to be a special place for people to travel.

If the Florida housing market didnt drop to rock bottom, Tanner would still be owner and it would be a top course.

I am referencing the Golf Digest top 100 golf courses in the United States. This would include all golf courses-private and public. The Bluffs never made that list. Only 1 golf course in Louisiana has made that list. Here is the current list:

I mean he didnt reference anything. He just said top 100. Weird to try and argue that.

I don’t know if slow improvements are going to change anything. It would help if the course was in the heart of civilization. But it is a good 45 minutes from Copper Mill.
And even if they turned the corner and solved a majority of the issues, there isn’t a “Santa Maria” crowd waiting to play. The Bluffs rarely, if ever, have days like that. In it’s peak, you would find a group every.....4 holes, maybe.
