Any good recommendations for NELA area to play? I played Squire Creek a few weeks ago and it was amazing. I know I will not get the same experience as that, but looking for a nice place to play with a couple other dads when I'm up for a travel baseball tournament. TIA

I've never played Squire, but I hear it's immaculate. As you mentioned, none of the other courses will be on par with it. You really only have a handful of choices, and a couple of them, you'd have to play with a member.
- Chennault is public, but I'm not sure of its condition.
- Frenchman's Bend I believe is open to the public. I haven't played there in a year or so, but it was in decent shape last time I was there.
- Bayou Desiard you'd have to play with a member, but if you're wanting something close to Squire's manicure level, this would be the one.
- Calvert Crossing you'd also have to play with a member. It's in decent shape for being early, but they've had some issues with bald areas on 3-4 greens for a couple of years now.
- Black Bear is far away, but it's public. I just played it last weekend, and the scenery is awesome. There's not a house on the course; it's all in the woods. However, some of the tee boxes, fairways, and greens were not in great shape. The green fee was pretty cheap though, so it's probably worh it.

The pickings are pretty slim.
If you have a connection, the next best course is Bayou DeSiard CC. Typical old school course. Very flat. Nothing special about the layout, but usually maintained in good shape.
Next is Calvert Crossing in Calhoun. More challenging layout and the greens can be difficult. If you spray the ball all over then this is not your course as it is a target-shot layout. Course is in decent shape but takes longer to come out of the dormat season as there are so many trees that block the sunshine.
Frenchmen’s Bend is next. Flat course that is pretty easy unless the wind is blowing and then it can have some bite as it is built on an old rice field and very exposed. Have not heard about current conditions
Chennault Park Golf Course is a city owned course. I personally have not had the need to play it in the last 25 years, so take that for what you will.
Now if you have the time for a drive, Mystic Creek in El Dorado, Arkansas is about 1:20 drive from Monroe. It is a well conditioned course and will likely be one of the tougher courses you will play. Arguably a better course than Squire Creek, but not a better overall experience.

Yep you made it to the top of Everest for golf courses in the NE LA area if you played Squire. As mentioned the only other course in the same stratosphere as Squire is Mystic Creek but it’s in El Dorado, AR and is somewhat of a drive from Monroe. The suggestions already given are pretty spot on. Bayou Desiard and Calvert are both private but are well maintained and legit. Obviously you will need a connection to get on either. That leaves Frenchman’s which is probably the course for y’all. It’s an ok course but a much better option than Chennault that is a borderline goat ranch. Then you have Black Bear in Delhi which would be my default public course recommendation but it’s a drive from Monroe too so take that into consideration.

Trails End in Arcadia is a fun course and usually in pretty decent shape. Lots of hills. Bout 40 minutes from Monroe.

During my sentence in Monroe i played Chennault pretty much every day in the summer after work. Its nothing special but not bad
Frenchmans bend: better than Chennault. Almost always a baw with a jacked up golf cart with speakers on it cranking ultras and blasting country. ~30 minutes from Monroe proper
Black Bear: easily my favorite of the courses I played often out there. Worth the Drive if you've got 45 minutes each way to spare. Was always pretty empty so pace wasn't an issue for me
Bayou Desiard: nicest of the courses, only played it once

Don’t sleep on morehouse country club. Should add it to the list. Pretty good course there. Not BDCC nice, but generally better than the other public courses around.

Everyone is accurate with their descriptions.
Chennault is improving, but still the very definition of an average municipal course. Greens on 8 and 12 (deer urine) are about as poor as any in the region.
Haven't been to Frenchman's in a couple months, but it's a very wide open course that is better than Chennault, but perhaps not quite justified by the price jump. But if coming in for a trip, it's likely your best choice. Especially if you are in for travel ball at the Sterlington complex. Not far at all from there.

Not sure when you are headed this way but Frenchmans Bend has a tournament April 25-27
Bayou Desiard also has a tournament that weekend

Pretty accurate descriptions. I will add Black Bear was the best course in Louisiana per multiple magazines when it opened. It's not as good because they let probably a hundred bunkers go. I was told they cost 32K a year to maintain per, which doesn't seem accurate to me. Still, it is on par with any public golf course in the state imo.
Also, Chennault had Calvert/Black Bear's Pro for a while and they made big jump in quality. I want to say ULM's golf coach is running it now and doing a great job.
