Mentally failing

I play every Tuesday and Thursday. Thursday is a weekly club tournament. Tuesday’s I play as a single somewhere I get a good rate. Get paired with a stranger. On Tuesday’s I almost, without fail, shoot something in the 70’s. Today shot 76. On Thursday’s, the results are much different…normally high 80’s or low 90’s.
You’re going to say I get nervous in tournament play. I’d agree except for the fact that I played high level tournament golf for about 15 years and won my share of tournaments. Nerves were never an issue. I loved tournament play. Then why do I now play so terrible in a little weekly club event that means nothing.
I’m so confused. Any advice?

Pressing maybe? I did something different for the first time ever after 10 years - even on a course I’m super familiar with - I game planned the round. Forced myself to pick even more specific spots and absolutely balled out. I wouldn’t say you’re mentally failing but maybe try a different strategy for the round. I literally put clubs on the card and forced myself to play to it even though I know I could be far more aggressive or get away by hitting it other spots. Played a little more old man golf but played it super aggressive.

I’m in the same boat right now and appreciate the advice. Thanks for posting about this!

Do you go for every par 5? I make the same amount of birdies whether I go for it or not. It’s nice to have an eagle putt, but a miss with a longer club can lead me from a sure par 5 to bogey or even worse.
When you get out of position, do you think “hit a great shot and have a birdie putt!” Or “how do I take double out of the equation?”
Do you play shots you can execute 80% of the time? A simple Texas wedge from off the green may not be cool, but a bad putt is way better than a bad chip.
Do you hit 9 windows on command? If not, just play the shot that seems to be working that day. Don’t force yourself to play 6 different tee shots with driver.
You know all of this. You can do it.
Long putts think “speed.”
Short putts think “square.”
I hate it when I get very precise on the line of a 40 footer, and then blow it 6 ft by or leave it 5 ft short.

Where are you losing strokes in this situation? Off the tee? Putting? Everywhere?

You can have some aniexity without feeling it.
Maybe try a fitbit and evaluate the rounds readings.
We all know golf is a game of fractions.
A friend of mine won the US Pub Links and could shoot a 65 at the drop of a hat.
He would go to Q School and dominate the first couple of rounds. The 3rd or 4th round , it was like he forgot how to play.

Pound one mic ultra 10 mins before your round and take 1/2 of a robaxin. Repeat at the turn.

Whats the format of the tournament? Stroke or match play? Are you giving up or getting strokes? Does everyone play from the same tees or are their seniors in the tournament?
