Is there anything I can do to help with my mental game when it's tournament time? I choked big time earlier this summer, and I am anxious as hell for my club championship this weekend. When I feel like this, I play like crap. I just lose all touch and lose my putting which is my saving grace.

How do you guys handle it? Booze, drugs, experience? Are there books to read or videos to watch?

The only thing i've found that helps is booze.... but conveniently the exact amount of booze that it takes not to care about the tournament is also the exact amount of booze that negatively effects my game

I remember my first tournament I played in (after not playing in tourneys for a few years). I was shaking uncontrollably. My swing held up but when it came to lining up my putts, it felt like I had Parkinson's disease in my hands. As we were walking tothe next tee a guy in my group said, "we know you can play. Just play. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks. Just play your game. If you weren't good you wouldn't be here." Truthfully, dude is right. It didn't help me at all for the rest of the round. Heart beating like a young man pumping his GF for the first time over every single shot.

Just play your game. Its just another round. Commit to your shots and then just execute.

Try to convince yourself you like the nervous feeling. It's good that you're nervous, embrace it.

When I get like that I tell myself "this is what it's all about"

That nervous feeling is a thing of the past for us has beens that played ball in HS or college.

Golf is the only thing I've found that can still get your heart going like that anymore.
Embrace it. That feeling is a good thing.

Don’t let a bad shot ruin your whole round and don’t turn a bogey into a double or worse.
Tempo!!!

Same. A small amount goes a long way. 2 beers before you start, 3 on the front 9, 2 or 3 on the back 9. Stick to this formula, and you'll be fine. It gets tricky when you're trying to gauge hard liquor. Then your round can get away from you.

In my tournaments the average winning score of my flight is around 85-95. So I go out and make everything a par 5, which would give me a 90 (on a par 72). Then anything under that is lagniappe. It's helped me so much! Tournament golf is a whole different animal than a normal round. It takes a lot out of you mentally and physically. Makes you appreciate what the pros do even that much more.

Find a jingle to say to yourself before each shot to make it about that shot and not the round. "aim small miss small" or "center hit" or something to make your mind focus on that shot, that moment.

Not a big competitive golfer, but use to shoot rifles a lot. You dont get the shot back after it's gone, so make it count. If you dont, no worries... re focus and take another stab at it... for 98 shots.

Since my last major choke job. I’ve been picking a placement in front of the ball to hit at. Then say to myself, “breathe, now send it”. That’s been working.
Also, I will not be sore from carrying my worthless partner on the first day. fricking Malvin

My first stroke play tournament, I shot 89 the first round. No pressure after that. 76 the next day with no chance to get any money. That helped.

It just comes down to playing in more tournaments and sticking to a pre shot routine. It’s just comfort

PID w/ money on the line = better tournament performance. Even if it’s just $20/round.

That’s our weekly game. That doesn’t phase me a bit, but now there s a trophy and bragging rights. For other tournaments, the Calcutta alone can be $1000+ for first. I think playing more will help.

No doubt.

Dfloffs, when pride is on the line, is better than any bet. Plus, you don’t have to really pay if you lose. You can fight your way out of the parking lot. Just depends on your knucks game.
