I am lucky enough to be able to go to Augusta on Wednesday and for anyone that has been before is there anyway to know when and who are playing practice rounds early Wednesday morning? Wasn't sure if there was a way to plan ahead or you just get out there and figure it out. Our plan is to walk 18 with a specific group then post up for the par 3. Also any other advice would be much appreciated!

Very few will play a full 18 on Wednesday. And it won’t necessarily be straight through.

they dont announce it before hand. the players will usually just walk up to each other on the practice green and ask if they want to play 9 real quick or something.

once they are on the course they will have boards around with who is on which hole

Went last year and got to see pretty much all the big names. Amen Corner is literally a religious experience. Enjoy.

This is kinda on topic, but do they play practice rounds from different tee boxes? Never see a bunch of divot marks on Thursday.

They place green mats on the hitting areas of the par threes during practice rounds ..guys hit from right around the mats but never from the exact spot that they will hit from on Thursday

I'm going all day on Monday. Good to know about the boards that show who is out on the course. Can't wait to walk it.

Tiger’s custom is to play the back 9 only early on Wednesday. Went on the Wednesday in 2013. We were at the gate when it opened, and Tiger was already on the range. Suggest you hit merch pavilion first and buy your swag. You can check it in or ship it home so you don’t have to carry all day. The lines were crazy long in the afternoon, so definitely hit that first thing.

Then hit the range, and start on the back nine going down 10 and to Amen Corner. From there, head to 15. There is a pedestrian crossing between where they hit second shots and the layup zone. We were standing on that and got to get really close to Tiger and Freddy. 16 grandstand is a really cool place to watch action... they’ll be trying to skip their balls across the pond.

Spend the morning on the Big course and then plan on the afternoon watching the Par 3. We posted up along the side of the 5th hole. It’s a really narrow walkway for the players there, so you get a lot of great pictures. My buddy got a great shot of Arnie giving us a thumbs up. It was his second to last time playing. There’s bathrooms and concessions right behind you, and you can see 3 green, 4, 5 and 6 all from that one spot.

A great day to go. Just my opinion, but I'd rate the best 3 days at Augusta as:
Sunday
Saturday
Monday

Just something about the course on that day. Pristine, quieter.

I'll be there Monday, first timer. Why is it one of the best three days? My plan is get there as early as possible, buy merch, walk the entire course, then try to follow a couple of players. Then go back to Amen Corner and maybe 16. Can't f'n wait

Each night they walk the course to replace/fill divots. Done by hand. They do this for every PGA tournament, though.

Well this is just flat out incorrect. They lay down mesh on the areas they will use for the tournament so the players can't use that spot, but they use the teeing grass on the teeing ground on practice days.

Starts at the 24 second mark

This is right - they still hit off grass but the tees they will be playing from are meshed off.

I went in 2015 and caught Tiger, Crenshaw and Spieth on the back.

As someone already mentioned, get there extremely early. The gates may say they open at 7 am but the year I went they were open before day break. We did all our shopping before 7am and checked it all - it was a great treat for showing up early. We then went to the range (this could be a good indication of who is about to tee off). When Tiger comes out to hit balls there will be a lot of buzz and people will be asking where he is teeing off and most will speculate the back 9. I remember asking an ESPN camera man and he said Tiger typically plays the back, so they expected him there but even they weren't sure it seemed.

Just enjoy the day - soak it all in. The Par 3 contest didn't really do anything for me. Spend as much time as humanely possible on the main course.

That’s what he said. Just replace mats with mesh. He never said they hit off the mats.

. Reading comprehension has never been a strength of mine. My apologies for the mistake.

You are right I thought he was saying they hit off green driving range mats. Going to go back to lurking now.

I went on Wednesday 2 years ago. I second pretty much every piece of advice given in this thread so far. Definitely get there very early, park and go shopping first. You can get into the gift shop before they actually open the course. I recommend parking by 6:30 AM at the latest. We actually walked all of our stuff back to the car after purchasing, but you can check it as well if you don't feel like doing that.

I would also recommend entering the grounds around the back entrance that lets you onto the course around Amen Corner. There's a large gift shop back there that I found less crowded than in the front, and it's a shorter walk to the parking lots.

Everything is great on Wednesday, but the thing I enjoyed most that day might have been going back onto the big course after the Par 3 was over around 5:00-6:00. The course is closed to play at that time, so it was pretty empty. Walking around Amen Corner and around by 15 and 16 with almost no one else around except my buddy was a really cool experience. We got up close to several greens (7&16 we got about 3 feet from up next to the ropes). As someone else mentioned, it was a religious-like experience. Highly recommend hanging around as late as you can.

Less crowded...everyone is super excited because it is the first day...all the merchandise is available...but more than anything...it's less crowded. Enjoy it!
