Any ideas on how to prepare the ground? Not looking for an artificial turf green, rather a real grass green.

So I looked into this years ago. What I found was the amount of money I was going to spend doing it myself made me very nervous that I’d be unable to make it work. If I did it now, I’d hire a professional.

OP, you going to buy a reel mower capable of cutting the grass that low without burning it? BIggest thing about green design and general health is to have it not hold water. Plan on aerating 4x a year and top dressing regularly. Also, plan on spending a good bit of money in chemicals.

Not trying to be that guy, but artificial is the way to go unless you're retired or have a background in turf management

being a golf course Superintendent, go artificial for your backyard putting green. it will be much cheaper.
just for perspective you need a walking reel mower capable of mowing to at least 1/8". some sort of sprayer, not a 1 gallon pump sprayer, irrigation, drainage, someone to sharpen and maintain your mower, rent a verti - cutter at least 6 times a year, rent an aerifyer 3-4 times a year, fertilizer( not crap form box stores, greens grade quality fertilizer), pesticides, Sand to top dressing. you will need to mow 6 days a week from May to October and 4-5 days a week march to may and ocober to december. 2-3 days a week december to march.

Are there anybody that does greens maintenance that aren't tied to clubs, like freelance so to speak that has the equipment and chemicals?

I hate mowing my yard once a week because it takes time away from the course. I couldn't imagine having to mow that many times in a week. I'd spend all my time on maintenance and none on practice.

It also sounds cheaper to join the local club and pay someone to maintain an entire golf course for you.

Are you looking for a putting green to practice on or something to hit to? I have 2 "greens" with flags in my yard to hit balls to.

I just mow on the lowest setting on my mower and after a few months they grew in where the grass was different from the rest of my yard. I mow in the same pattern every time. I have maintained them for several years now and while I can't putt on them they are still fun to practice hitting wedges and pitching for short game.

If you want a putting green go artificial like blanc said.

there may be a guy or two out there, but i am not sure. It will probably be a superintendent of a club, or a landscaper that has worked at a golf course and has experience. there is nothing easy about maintaining greens. they need to be checked daily for stresses (disease, insect pressure, mechanical stresses, water logged, etc..) As much as I hate artificial turf, i suggest it for a back yard putting green.

I know a few people that take care of athletic fields on a large scale and I’m sure they can help. I can pass along their info if you’d like.
