After the "UClub has crappy greens" thread, I started thinking; What do you guys think the top 3 must haves for greens?

My 3
1.) Grass
2.) Be fast
3.) Be consistent green to green.

I dont really care if they look a certain way, or if they are grainy. As long as the top 3 are there, I can read and putt.

1) 1 type of grass. I don’t want to take relief from button weed.
2) Consistent- I can adapt to different speeds at different courses if they are all the same throughout the course.
3) Receptive- I don’t want to hit a PW into the green and watch it spring off like it hit concrete.

Plush but fast >>>> grainy and slow

Hard or soft is a little like speed. Figuring out roll out is part of the game. But I agree that hitting a wedge and watching it bounce 15 feet forward and continue rolling would piss me off.

I think consistency is the thing.

Our course has fast, smooth greens so I’m ok with it.

I play some places where the speed really varies from green to green and it makes it harder to gauge a 20 or 30 foot putt.

1) roll true
2) bounce(less of it)
3) consistent

Fast and enough breaks to make you think about it.

I hate thinking I'm becoming a good golfer only to go to a really nice course and 3-4 putt every hole because I'm used to muni greens that are slow and straight forward.
