Over twenty-years ago an unknown John Daly burst onto the scene with a dramatic victory at the 1991 PGA Championship. And now you can buy his title–winning club at auction.
Daly was ninth on the list of alternates, and he didn’t even bother to play a practice round at Crooked Stick Golf Club.
The rest is history, as he went onto claim the PGA Championship with a 12-under 276 for a three shot victory. Green Jacket Auctions, which is hosting the sale, describes Daly’s club as: “a highly unusual 44 1/2 driver with Cobra composite kevlar head with a titanium shaft.”
The top bid is currently $1,610, but there’s still a week left in the auction, so you’ve still got time to bid if you want to own a piece of history.

Current bid at $4,176.00

**UPDATE** After seeing a Golf Magazine article about this auction, Dick Liesz, the then-VP of Technical Services for Cobra that produced this club for Daly reached out to us to provide additional info. He also remarked that seeing this driver again "brought back some very fond memories."
This is the club that we designed for John Daly when he won the PGA Championship at Crooked Stick in 1991.
The head material is called "Lauramid" and was invented in Germany. It not only offered high wear resistance, an inch thick piece of it would stop a .357 magnum bullet at point blank range. My right hand guy and I took a head to the curb and poured concentrated muriatic acid on it --- nothing happened to the head, but the cement curb got eaten away.
Daly at the time had a 142 mph clubhead speed and he cracked every metal wood driver head that he tried. His agent came to us and asked if we could fit him with something that he could play with. The head only has 6.5 degrees of loft... It was an extra firm titanium shaft powder coated translucent red.

128 is the highest I can find. Low 130s would not be unbelievable, but no way it was in the 140s.

I can't help it if DJ is a soft nerd.

I had a set of Ping Eye II with titanium shafts, and a Wilson Whale driver w/titanium shaft. Ti shafts were all the rage then. 0* torque, low kick points, wherever club face was pointing, that's where ball was going!

I had the exact same setup in college. Loved those titanium shafts
