It’s eye opening how much alignment matters

I just got back into playing after a year without touching a club and the first thing I realized that was off was my alignment was way off, extremely off.
I played 9 yesterday focusing on alignment with every shot and the the difference from my first round back to that 9 holes was eye opening.i shot 6 over just focusing on alignment.
I picked an intermediate target on every shot 6 to 7 inches in front of the ball and made sure I was aligned parallel on every shot with my body to that intermediate target and the consistency was unreal. I even did this when putting.
When you feel like your are aligned properly it changes your swing, it’s more confident.
You cannot play this game well without having a good set up and aligned properly, body parallel to your target line.
I bet 90% of amateurs are aligned terribly when playing.
Brian Kelly agrees.

Golfers concern themselves with positions during the swing (hips, arms, takeaway) when it doesn’t matter if your aren’t aligned.
The set up sets up 90% of the swing.
And anyone can set up correctly, you don’t have to hit a ball to set up .

Realizing this as well.
Had been trying to play with open/closed stance, different ball positions and release patterns etc when I realized that if I just line up with my feet and shoulders aligned with the club face, and keep my hands quiet, the ball tends to go relatively straight.

I need to focus on all the things I can do before the swing even starts.
If I get those right, and have good tempo and stay in my posture, I can get around decently.

You have to practice the shite out if it though, every range session needs alignment sticks.
I checked the score card again and it was 6 over on the 9 but still was night and day.

Set up is almost everything IMO.
You can’t do anything if you aren’t set up right.
Tour pros focus on this hard every day.
If you are set up shitty your brain knows and will try and compensate during the swing.

A lot of people when they get dead on parallel to the target line are gonna feel like they are aiming way left, most people aim too far right when setting up. They put their body on the target but it has to be parallel LEFT to the target line.
The only way to do this is to pick an intermediate target in front of the ball.
It’s impossible to align to something 200 yards away consistently.

Just had this same lesson and can’t agree more. Like most amateurs I have a tendency to aim right. I started lining up the club with an intermediate target and making sure my heels are parallel with the ball target line of ball and club. Made a huge difference in ball striking.
Your body will adjust and make bad swings when the brain knows you aren’t aligned. It’s crazy how much alignment matters. I knew a lot of my swing issues were set up related. Really working on that.

And not just the feet…it’s easy for the shoulders and/or hips to get too open or closed at address even if the feet are correct. Gotta monitor that stuff constantly

Shoulders are probably more important than the feet.

hips
This gets a lot of people. They line their shoulders and everything but not from neutral hips and they’ll pull/push it and get frustrated.

In my experience observing other players, amateurs overthink and overexagerate their alignments based off of random youtube instructions and it causes bad misses
Generic alignment advice is not my favorite

Also doesn't help when you get unsolicited advice from buddies about the shot you were "set up for" or how you should line up

its a fundamental, you cant play well without being set up right.
Like aiming a gun without the sights.

This is one of the biggest recent discoveries I've made about my swing while practicing over the Winter. The link below is the video I watched which helped tremendously. I even use it when putting and I've never putted better.

Most golfers I play with don't realize when they are lined up wrong. I have sometimes struggled with being too closed even when I think I'm opening my stance. I can feel if my shoulders and feet are crossed up but I don't mind when someone tells me I'm lined up too far right or too far left. Proper alignment is not an easy technique to master.

same here but more like 4 years...
bout to retire and been visiting the range and practice greens...
it feels like I've got to re-learn which end of the club to grab...

Did 9 holes on Saturday and it was blowing to beat hell here, wind gusts topped out at 68 mph. Other than that it was sunny and 76, yeah, so I was just out for a walk and to swing a club with no expectations. Figured I'd be losing tons of balls so I pulled a TaylorMade that I'd found the had a Sharpie line running half the ball. It covered the part telling me what kind of TM ball this was, no matter.
So when I teed up I used the Sharpie line to aim the ball in the direction I wanted it to go, like lining up a putt. Then I addressed the ball almost exactly like this video, starting from behind, lined up the club first, then aligned my feet.
I played fantastic off the tee hitting every fairway in the round. Did I mention how bad the wind was gusting? It was incredible I was hitting fairways and keeping the ball on course.
I think it was all due to proper alignment and not over swinging.
ETA: Finally lost that ball on the 8th Par 3, when my tee shot came up short when it got knocked down in the wind and ended up in a hazard that you have to clear on the par 3. Only ball lost that day.

Confidence skyrockets once you think/know you are aligned properly.
You won’t hit every shot perfect obviously but having confidence when you are over the ball knowing your angles are set up correctly to your target is huge.

Did a range session and used alignment sticks bought from Home Depot for $2and just focused on this for every shot.
I picked a target, picked an Intermediate target (I put a bright piece of neon paper in front of the ball about 6 feet on the target line) and made sure every stance and shot was aligned.
I got behind the ball before every shot and hit every shot dead on aligned in my stance.
Probably the best practice session I’ve ever had, I didn’t even think about mechanics.
This is the way.
