Is Gooch going to end up the only “high level” guy really hurt with his LIV move?

With the USGA announcement it seems like by the time most of the big names lose exemptions the path will be laid for them to still be able to play in the majors. Most of the other guys who made the LIV jump without major exemptions aren’t really high level players and we’re going to likely struggle ti get into majors anyway.

So is Gooch basically the odd man out at this point? Poor guy

Don’t really understand your question… wouldn’t consider Gooch a “high level” guy.

He had a big year in 2023, but MC in 2 out of 3 majors. He’s barely a top 100 golfer now… currently T47 with Ollie Schniederjans in R1 of LIV Riyadh

Plenty of career PGA guys gave up playing in Majors with their LIV move.

Paul Casey, Varner, Ancer, Kokrak, Na, Pieters, Patrick Reed (outside of Masters)

What I mean is that all of those guys you mentioned, and mostly all of the other LIV initial guys were established players who either

1. Were average to below average players that struggled to qualify for every major anyway

2. Were established enough to already be qualified for most/all the majors for the next several years

3. Already won majors and had status that way

4. Were past their prime

The only real up and coming guy that people thought was destined to be a competitor for multiple majors for years, who didn’t already have some kind of major qualifying status, and went to LIV, is Gooch.

I’m maybe missing a few guys but just about every other young guy without status who went to LIV was at least projected to be a wholly average or below average pro

I guess I just disagree with you here.
Gooch was over 30 & had been on PGA Tour for years with only 1 win.
Very similar to many of the guys I previously mentioned & highlighted below. Majority of those guys would still be in all of the majors if they stayed with the PGA

I remember he was a solid signing for LIV, but hardly a “high level” guy.

Gooch made himself a high level player with his mouth. Niemann and Ancer are the two who really fit your criteria but Niemann has played well enough to get into majors.

If gooch had gone to LIV like Varner and some others who remained fairly quiet I don’t think anyone would have negative opinions of him.

I would have said Hatton would be the next high level guy without any extended exemptions into majors past 2025, but he is playing so well outside of LIV & looks like professional golf is heading in the right direction where it won’t be an issue
