Watching GMAC tee off on a par 3 today. Teed it up, went through final checks with his caddy, and the right before he hit he bends down and swaps out his Srixon for a callaway ball. When would this serve a purpose? Do you use a playing partner’s ball when you know you would taken advantage of the ball’s characteristics? He hit a srixon on his hole in one btw

I thought they had to play the same ball every hole.

Probably the ball of his playing partner. Allows them to hit their own ball into the green and know how it will react.

For each hole, you would usually use the player’s ball who will be hitting the approach shot - but Graeme plays a Srixon so not sure why he would’ve switched for that hole - maybe it was a wind issue and he thought the Callaway would do better for that shot.

We had a new dude in our golf league trying to do this on his second shots in stroke play. He would tee off with a distance ball and then try to swap for a tour ball in the fairway. We said “Hey *Timmy* we play the ball down in this league. Hand to God he said “What’s that?”

I imagine since it was a par 3 he wanted his partner to putt with his ball.

Was that the hole in 1 he hit?

No he hit the ace on 17 ( his 8th hole for the round), and this was on 3. He hit it short of the green for record and told his caddy that he picked the wrong club. He was in between 5 and 6 iron based on his discussions

I saw that as well! I was the tee box Marshall on 3. He put it in the bunker and told his caddy it was purely the wrong clubs fault
