Imagine getting to practice 8 hours ever single day with a coach though I think if good natural athletes got a year to do that they would be averaging in the mid 70s for normal golf courses
Michael Phelps tried to do it and couldn’t. And he had unlimited time, resources, Hank Haney, and Golf Channel helping him.

Far cry from a full year commitment

Excellent point
Some low cappers are definitely really dependent on 1-2 courses. And those courses might be wide open, or not have bunkers, might have flat large greens, etc
There are a lot of different levels and styles of golf courses
For us down in south LA, the challenge is that we deal with zero elevation or sea level challenges.
So if we go anywhere with elevation for a couple rounds, it can be tough. Now, I’d like to think If I spent a month playing at elevation, I’d get used to it and start to shoot scores I am accustomed to shooting here.

It gets exponentially harder the lower you get. My senior year at LSU I got down to around a 10. Worked an internship the summer before and made pretty good money so I didn’t work that fall. I played golf 2-3 times a week and practiced a ton. I used to go the the pitch and putt at the lsu course and drink beer and work on my short game at night under the lights.
Breaking 100 can be done just by learning ball striking. Breaking 90 can be done by learning consistency. Breaking 80 gets a lot harder. You’re talking about shot placement, or exceptional putting. If you think about it, you get around 5 mistakes a round. Every approach shot has to leave a makable putt. Every recovery has to be perfect.
Honestly chipping and putting was the single biggest way I improved my game. Being able to chip well and make putts was a huge advantage. I found when I started working on that more I was able to find myself with a much higher frequency of scoring opportunities. But that required a ton of work. Ton.
Follow a pro at a tourney. Not one of the marquee guys, just a guy, and see how good those guys are. Even an average tour player is so freaking good.

We ain’t taking about this guy becoming a tour player. We are talking about him getting to scratch.
A scratch golfer is about the same distance away from being a tour player as is a two star high school football player is from making a nfl roster,
If this guys really works at it as he says he is AND works at the correct things (which will be doubtful), he can get to become a scratch golfer pretty easily. There is absolutely no way in hell he is making the pga tour.

I got down to single digits in a single year while having children and a full time job. I would have easily been scratch if I had full devotion. Easy
I play with many scratch guys at my club. This isn’t bragging. It’s just pointing out scratch really doesn’t mean much in the macro golf world
I’ve also helped good athletes get to a 4.5 level in tennis in a very short period of time. But once again, while that’s awesome for playing around at your club, you are getting your doors blown off by anyone “pro”

In my mind, if I average a 77, I’m a 5 handicap.
I got down to a 5 handicap rarely breaking 80 on a course with a rating of 75.1 and a slope of 143. Usually played from the back tees at just over 7000 yards. 20 years later I’m probably a10-12 handicap playing less than once per month, but hopefully that goes down once I retire in two weeks.
He won’t be scratch in one year.

With that swing zero percent chance he breaks even 90 in a year.
