Ok, I’ve pretty much come to the realization I need to go back to regular flex. Over 40 years I’ve played stiff or X stiff. I checked the swing speed and I’m still over 90 if I’m swinging hard, but if I dial back to a more relaxed swing that I’m consistent I’m about 82. Charts I see suggest that’s R flex territory.

So, club up and keep the stiff for another year or bite the bullet and spend some of my next commission on a new set.

Thoughts?

Are you playing poorly with your current setup? How is the dispersion?

My iron misses are generally left for coming over the top when I miss. Natural shape is right to left on them, but I can bend it and way I want when needed.

Dispersion...more short than anything. That’s probably from hitting it a bit chunky on occasion I would say. My line is pretty good.

With the driver my miss is more right, but I don’t miss fairways by much when I do miss. I’m about 80% in the fairway off the tee. About 260 is my average now

If I could sign a document right now that didn’t jeopardize my soul guaranteeing this I would fly across the world to do it, and I hit it farther than that

If you’re hitting 80% of fairways and getting driver out 230+ at 90 I wouldn’t change the driver at all. However you could go to regular flex in the irons. It’s common for people to play a flex stiffer in woods than irons

A buddy of mine finally made the switch. He’s back to scratch golf. He had been struggling big time! It’s great to see him playing well again. He said he wished he had switch 2 years earlier.

If you’re serious about your game, don’t make shaft decisions solely based on swing speed. Go get fitted to the proper shafts.

Just trying to enjoy the game now. My days of trying to break 60 are behind me

I know Graphite Design Tour AD shafts have a slightly buffed up regular flex called R/S or S/R, it's not a senior flex. Might want to check those out. Super expensive but great performing shafts

Fujikura does too in the higher end shafts. Pretty sure Dallas Golf is having a special right now on the Evolution III.

This is what I was fitted for. Works for me.
59 year old, 8 hdcp, 105ish (up to 109) swing speed w/ driver.

I’ll check that out. Sounds like a good option.

If you are playing steel in your irons, then going from a DGS s300 to a R300 won't cost you anything dispersion wise at that swingspeed, but you will probably have miminal gains in distance, but you wont have to use as much effort which can keep you fresher.

Graphite iron shafts are a different animal and you need to be fitted by a professional fitter.

As far as woods, I believe the Tensi Orange shafts perform very well in the regular flex without sacrificing accuracy.

I am 65 and I currently play Regular Tensi Orange shafts in my fairway woods and hybrids. I do use a Stiff Tensi Blue 60 in my driver because the length.

Good luck.

I play regular flex iron shafts hard stepped down they fit nicely in between. Nippon Modus 105

Oban makes great shafts and I had them in my 790’s in a regular +.

Distance wise I hit 5 iron 195 off tee and the gap down about 10 yards per club from there. When I played stiff flex clubs I didn’t have that same distance. Probably 185 then 10 yard gap going down. My confidence picked up because of being able to swing within myself and not having to get after the stiff flex

Great thread! Your description of your game and situation mirrors mine almost exactly. I have begun to ask myself these same questions. A lot of good responses!
