The first 5 holes on Spyglass may be the best opening holes in golf. The rest of the course is a test and somehow always feels like it’s all uphill.

Pacific Grove is by far the best deal in California and the back nine is beautiful. It wasn’t in great shape when I played it, but the price and view made up for it.

Pasatiempo is as close to Augusta’s greens as you’ll ever get. It’s a fun track, but overdevelopment and some other quirks (like the trees added for safety between 6-8) ruin some of the initial MacKenzie design. Still 100% worth playing at least once.

Even if you don’t play Pebble, go sit at one of the fire pits at the restaurant off the 18th green. Last time I went, we sat their for a couple hours eating, drinking, talking to random people, and just taking it all in. It was awesome.

You had to ask, didn’t you? For 3 of us, I think it was around $400.

That's lower than I expected. I wonder if they even have a happy hour at Pebble.

One guy probably had 5 beers at $9-10 a piece, so that kept the price down for us. Scotch was my vice of choice that night at $20-25 a pop.

They didn’t have Happy Hour at The Bench or The Tap Room, from what I remember. We met a guy at the Tap Room that’s been a regular for 30+ years. He said it’s changed over the last 10-15 years due to more security and planned events, but during the Pro-Am the Tap Room used to be the place to go to get shithoused with all the celebs.

Planning for a trip in August, putt1058 care to do a recap for your trip?

Didn't feel like starting a new thread, all the responses in here sound solid. Only thing that seems to have changed is Pebble opening the Hay course.

Anyone ever play Del Monte? It's right by where I will be working.

What specific questions do you have?

I recently played Pebble and Spanish Bay. Stayed off property and had no issues getting on a day in advance.

Pretty much what you just answered ha. Will I have trouble making a day of or day in advance reservation.

May be off early some days, not exactly sure of my schedule so just hard to plan.

Also unsure if rental car or just Uber is the best way to get around?

Rental car is an absolute must for the area. You'll want to drive 17 mile drive and venture into Carmel whenever you want. We did use Lyft a couple times when having some drinks a ways away from the hotel, minimum wait times.

I was flexible on my days and times, so was able to plan around tee times that were available. Pebble was worth the price tag.

My back-up plan if i couldn't get on the big 3 was Poppy, Quail Lodge, Pacific Grove.

Have played Del Monte several times. It's one of the oldest courses in the area, flat, and not that exciting (especially when compared with the other courses in the area).

The Fort Ord courses (Bayonet and Black Horse) are really good courses and not nearly as expensive as the 17 mile drive courses. Close Uber or drive from Del Monte too.

Single. No shot you are getting on as a group without staying on property and booking months in advance.

There were 3 open single times for the entire day I played Pebble, and I got hooked up w/ reserving 48 hours in advance.

I'm going to make an attempt to get on after the LSU game in September. Going to rent a car and at least make the highway 1 drive. Worst case I go to the bar have some drinks and enjoy the views. Best case I get to play.

We stayed at Spanish Bay about 3 years ago on a special deal. It was fabulous ~ they have a bagpipe player who plays Amazing Grace at sunset. We had 2 rounds of golf and 2 nights of lodging for some ridiculously low price. Their staff is the best we have ever experienced at a hotel.

We usually stay in Carmel or Pacific Grove and, like others have said, the public course in Pacific Grove is awesome.

I lived in Monterey twice for a total of a couple of years. I played Poppy a lot as a Northern California golf association player for real cheap. I played Spyglass once (so hard) and PG too many times to count. My favorite course is def Spanish Bay. Links style on the ocean and the above poster is right, the bagpipes are epic and send a chill down your spine for sure. Quail Lodge and San Juan Oaks were also in the rotation. Laguna Seca was ok and Del Monte was alright. I never got to play Clint Eastwoods place in Carmel Valley

Looks like staying at any of the Pebble Resorts is out very limited availability during the time I am going. Will keep checking.

Anyone ever stay at the Hyatt on Del Monte? Most likely will be staying there.

Spanish Bay looks awesome, definitely want to play there and Pacific grove.

PG is real short and only fun because of the views on the back 9. I forgot Blackhorse and Bayonet up at ole Fort Ord. They were also in our heavy rotation (especially as I lived in the apartments right off of the #11? fairway. Bayonet is long

If you have a choice, stay in either Carmel or Monterey. Both puts you walkable to all kinds of places.

Carmel is awesome. All the hotels are probably a 5 minute walk to the beach.

Like someone else said, the Hyatt isn't near anything so you have to drive. Carmel or Pacific Grove is much better for walking to restaurants and shops. We stayed at the Hyatt a few times when our son was young but the last time it seems like it was in need of a little refreshing.
