Any recommendations? Heading up to that area Thursday- Sunday to stay at a friends lake house. We've got an early tee time friday at Rocky Branch. Looks like a decent course that shouldn't be too difficult. Any others in the area we should check out? (we plan to ride by augusta national and swoon)

Aiken Golf Club

Rocky Branch is not polished.
Nice people.
The River Golf Club, Forest Hills, Bartrum Trail, Applewwod, and Pointe South are all reasonable priced options.
Call ahead and you can probably play Belle Meade in Thomson.

To add to makersmark1, Belle Meade renovated their greens 2 or 3 years ago and I’ve heard good things.
The Aiken Golf Club is another I would recommend. To me it’s the best for the money, $40ish
Cedar Creek is a little out of the way but the greens were in fantastic shape a month or so ago. I dunno if they have aerated or not recently.

I hear that National club is pretty nice. But it’s pretty WASPy. You might not get in.

Champions Retreat is an incredible course.

I'd also recommend Jones Creek in Evans, but I haven't played it in a while.
EDIT: Never mind, I see they closed.

Forest Hills is a pretty cool track. It's a Donald Ross design. Home of Augusta State and Patrick Reed.

Also, not far-away is Hickory Knob state park.
Reynolds Plantation is about an hour and Savannah Lakes Village is about an hour.
Mount Vintage is a bit closer.

You will see a water tower, a hedgerow and some fencing. You will not even glimpse a blade of grass on the course.
There’s a nice Publix next to the huge parking area for Augusta National.
You can’t see a thing from any street.

I am a member at champions retreat but I play off campus on Fridays with a rotation of buddies who don’t wanna constantly drop the $190 to play champions.
Mount vintage is in great shape and has a lot of character. It’s not flat which is a bonus around here. Bent greens.
Belle Meade got the greens remodeled. The back 9 I really like. It goes through the neighborhood. The front is literally in an old cow pasture. Shame the front just kills it for me.
If you’re gonna drive to McCormick play Monticello. A few holes are on the lake it’s a good track.
Forest hills is historic. They are doing a lot of renovation on it now it’s not the best option aesthetically. The green can be more challenging there.
I’ve never played Aiken golf club but I’ve heard good things about it.
Places to avoid
Bartram trail
Pointe south
Augusta municipal golf course
Savannah lakes (Monticello is so much nicer and the same drive)
Cedar creek (it’s an average course and a long drive)

I thought Mount Vintage changed their greens to Bermuda a couple of years ago?

He signed up for Rocky Branch. I have not played it, but I think it is at or below the standard of Pointe South/Applewood.
If you can swing it, try to get on at Palmetto in South Carolina.
Of the public courses, The River Golf Club is possibly the best option along with Forest Hills.

I think you have to be with a member to play at Palmetto, unless they’ve changed their policy, for around $100.

I sent my buddy this thread, he said we're doing rocky branch because it's 5 minutes from the lake house. I mean it looks well maintained from the online photos and it's dirt cheap. I'm not expecting augusta national. Course rating is a little easier than my home course. I'll report back after friday. I'm fighting a nasty rib injury at the moment so probably for the best I don't fork out an exorbitant greens fee without knowing how i'm going to feel after teeing off.

Forest Hills - ask for Jeff Trecost, he is from Amite - tell him Mark sent you!

It will be the closest to the Lake on the Georgia side.
Hickory Knob is on the same lake on SC side. It is cheap as well.

I meant to say hickory knob not Savannah lakes on the not recommended side.
Hickory knob flat slow easy to putt greens. They have a “leaf rule” which means you can basically not take an OB because they are too cheap and lazy blow the shite into the woods at the edges of the fairway.
Play monticello at Savannah lakes.
