Went play at the old LSU course this past Sunday afternoon.
Playing by myself, got a group of 4 older guys in front of me.
I was stuck waiting for them since hole 3.
It took 2.5 hours to finish the front 9.
I tried to initiate conversation with them and see if they would let me play through... nothing
They didn't want to talk to me and they didn't let me play through.
They even got an attitude with me with I asked them to play through on the 10th.
I just said, "frick this" and left without playing the back 9.

Isn't there course rules about this?
I was told to skip the 10th and come back to it after 18, but I don't like skipping holes.
I like to play the holes in order

Those guys were dicks if there was room in front of them for you to go. I would've jumped them.

I thought about it
Another guy playing by himself in back of me caught up to us at the 6th hole
He and I finished the front 9 together but he was only playing 9 and said to skip them too on the on the back 9.

I'm kind of new to golf (only played about 10 rounds) so I wanted to finish the course in order.. just a mental thing I guess

You have to be exaggerating about the time here. No way 4 guys of any age should take over 5 hours to complete a round.

Many courses have pace of play guidelines that are enforced by marshals. I don't think LSU qualifies as one of those courses.

No. There were about 3 or 4 groups in front of them on the back 9

Not exaggerating. I was on a time limit so I was keeping time. I started the course at 1:20 and needed to be out of there by 6 to go meet the wife. checked my phone after 9, 3:57

I usually jump 3 holes ahead, come back and finish those three at the end, that way I am never in their way or they in mine.

At 1:20 on a Sunday, it's tough for me to have much sympathy for a single. That being said, yes, they should have let you through if there was space in front of them. But again, it's LSU and you aren't going to be playing around the most competent golfers.

Also, as a single, it's okay to be flexible and skip ahead especially if you have to finish by a certain time.

Can you start on the back 9 and finish on the front, if the front is more crowded?
Is that dependent on the course?

Yes. If you clear it with the pro shop or starter, especially at munis.

So singles are frowned upon?

Of course not! Although if you showed up as a single on a Saturday morning and wanted to play alone, you'd deserve a little ridicule.

I'm just saying that a single needs to be flexible. Waiting is almost always a given. Patience is important. If you're allowed to play through, be quick. Or if you don't want to be quick or bother the group you're waiting on, jump ahead as long as the next hole is clear and the group doesn't end up waiting on you waiting on another group.

when i play by myself and get behind groups, i usually hit two balls second shot to putting out. that lets the group get far enough ahead to resume a normal pace.

I used to work out there. 6 hr rounds are not that uncommon. It's the cheapest round in BR be the course isn't terrible, but the poce of play is horrible if you don't go in the morning.

Solid advice
I'll try that next time since I'm almost always playing alone

If it's an afternoon, and there's nobody to pair up with, I'd wait behind them a couple holes. If it was obvious they weren't going to let me play thru then I'd skip a couple holes in front of them. If there's groups in front, you're just out of luck. I have no desire to try and play play speed golf thru multiple groups.

Best thing is to just wait for others to catch up and join or if you've played 9 and it's getting painful, typically an afternoon muni round wasn't that expensive so just call it a day.

I don't have an issue letting anyone play thru, but if we're a 4 some and there's constantly singles or doubles coming up behind, at some point you have to cut it off and say f' em. They need to join each other.

Why would a single not want to pair up with others for no other reason than to level out pace of play?

No way I could handle a 6 hour round as a foursome much less a single.

As a single, especially on weekends, you have no rights unless its late in the afternoon. We skipped some hackers Sunday on the back ninebut there were several groups ahead of them also. So we turned around and went back to ten and started over. Had a twosome come off the front nine and we justlet them thru. Didn't have to wait the rest of the day. When I was learning the game as a yougster, that's was one of the Ten Commandments of golf. Let faster players thru.
