You're describing a bath room not a locker room.
Also regarding growing the game, I would consider it more inclusive to invite someone into your locker room rather than forcing them to change in the parking lot.
And, going all the way back to the OP, if you're driving a short distance and don't find the golf shoes to inhibit your ability to drive I would say there is nothing wrong with wearing them to the course.

Any club where the no shoes in the parking lot policy is in place is probably a club where you’ll want to check out the locker room anyway. Fallen Oak handles this the right way and has attendants meet you at your car. They take your clubs and shoes and tell you to check in in the pro shop and they’ll get you set up with a locker in the mean time. It’s a pretty neat experience. Got to play Calusa Pines and they’re locker room/men’s grill is incredible. You don’t want to miss this stuff when you get a chance to experience it.

Our locker room is deluxe.
I lost my locker key, but I just keep it open.
I have a change of shoes, assorted clothing, some golf balls, and sunscreen in there.
However, I’m often trying to get 9 in after work so I keep my clubs and shoes in the trunk of my car.
I use to store my clubs at the club and call ahead, but it seems easier since I walk most rounds to just keep everything in the car.

quote:If you don't have a locker there, which is most golfers including the OP, that's all it is. It's not inclusive if you have to be invited to do it. That is the literal definition of exclusive. "Growing the game" has little to do with private clubs or elite public courses that you are talking about.

It's also just a matter of convenience. I prefer to change shoes in the parking lot, rather than carry my golf shoes to the locker room, change them in there (which takes less than a minute), then carry my street shoes back to the car. Because again, most people don't have a locker.

Idk about anyone else but I don’t want to be treated like a private catholic school student when I’m trying to enjoy a weekend of golf.

They provide a locker room for a reason. You don’t have to actually use a locker but can still use the facility. It’s about etiquette and decorum. There is also a difference between a public basketball gym and private golf facility.
Okay how about kids playing basketball at a private gym (like a school), they also get a locker room but nobody cares if one of them puts shoes on in the parking lot

But golf etiquette is what separates us from the unwashed basketball masses.

You're grasping at straws here. In what world does inviting someone in equal non-inclusive? And, its not really an invitation its there for use.
I get your stance and others that they think it is pretentious, but in what other areas of life do you not feel you should follow the requested rules of a host? I also understand why people think it is more convenient to change in the parking lot, while others might find it more convenient to sit in a locker room to change.

Fair. But, asking someone to use a facility shouldn't keep them from taking up the game.
The norms of a basketball gym and a golf course are not the same. Its not an apples to apples comparison. Even so, I wouldn't change into basketball shoes in a parking lot. I'd probably do it in their locker room as well, but at the least, probably inside the gym itself.

quote:None, and I don't feel that way about golf courses either. You can follow the rules and still think they're dumb. Also, I've played hundreds of courses, many of them private. None of them have ever formally requested that I don't change shoes in the parking lot, and no one has ever said anything to me about it. That's just not a rule.

Tennis shoes to drive to the course and check in to get the cart. When loading up the cart & ice chest, I change into my golf shoes. If I need to run in for something, I keep my golf shoes on.
