Golf at the Highlands, North Carolina

I'll be in the Highlands in North Carolina on vacation in mid-July. Have a couple very rookie golfers in our group, including myself, but would love to venture onto a nice course up there. I've found a couple of private courses we can't book tee times for. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance

Haven’t played it, but I hear the historic resort in Cashiers is public tee times. That’s what I’m eyeballing next time we go to highlands.

Played Sequoyah National Gold Club last summer and it was beautiful. Great course. Tons of elevation change though.

I don’t think this is true but I’m very interested if it is.
Closest place to Highlands for public golf is Sky Valley, Ga.
Highlands is a wasteland for public courses unfortunately.

Played there a few times. Trillium is good for public. Wade Hampton-!!
Even got to play Headwaters as well. What a fantastic area for golf.
If you know someone at a private club to get you on then I’d go that route, otherwise Trillium is above par.

I don’t think there are public courses in Highlands. If you’re staying at an Old Edwards Inn property you have access to their course and it’s really nice. There may be similar arrangements for condo rentals at some of the other country clubs. Failing that, I would think you’d have to go to Saphire about 25 miles east to play. It is a nice course though.
