I realized the other day I have been opening my face on my back swing, and then closing on my forward swing.
I am working to change that.
Has anyone done this before and then corrected to better results?

I think opening it made it feel easier to rotate back.
(does any of this make sense?)

There are plenty of drills online for preventing a “rolling takeaway” ....

I struggled with it most of the time I golfed and most people do bc it feels powerful and natural.

If you are looking to fix it, first determine what is that particular move doing to your ball flight/ impact location.

Fanning usually puts the sweet spot off plane with an open club face if not compensated during the remainder of the swing.

Always look at strike, ground contact, and ball flight.. then work back from there. Working from aesthetics or what we visualize as the “perfect swing” hardly works for quick improvement.

Edit: I still play good golf with a rolling takeaway and so did Bruce lietzke

Holy shite...you just cause a huge lightbulb to go off for me. I think I've been doing this as well.

It's a pain in the arse for me because I think I wind-up coming up just shy of flush and I leave it open causing a heluvva slice at times.

Just grabbed an old club and sure as shite when I went to take a natural backswing I opened it right up.

I have my clubs getting fitted now, but can't wait to get them back so I can start working on this.

Thanks for posting this!

I’ve been battling this since I was a child.

Try keeping your knuckles on your left hand pointed at the ground.

Or put a Tee in the butt of the club and try to pull the club back and drag the tee across your back leg. If it turns toward the target you are doing it wrong.

Left arm rotation on the backswing is one of the biggest points of contention swing wise for me personally. I go back and forth from keeping the face shut going back to rotating open slightly. I have played poorly and well both ways.

I find that keeping the club head pointing down/shut makes me take it way too inside, and my miss is a huge pull hook. However I do get slightly better distance and compression with irons if done correctly.

Rotating open makes my swing feel a little more Fluid and free flowing. My misses are less severe (miss left and right) but I do lose about 5 yards or so per club in distance due to less compression.

I’m more comfortable usually with rotating open slightly because my misses aren’t as bad. I just swallow my pride and club up.

If you want to see great examples of both, look at rickie Fowler’s swing for the rotation type swing and brooks Koepka for the keeping club face shut type of swing.

Wow! I was doing this all day yesterday. I even had the dirty S word pop up a few times. I looked up a few drills and my swing felt normal again. I’ll have to remember that on the range before the round.

It is funny we all discovered this. I pretty much have been able to play my irons normally with the "fan" motion but my driver always slices. I am thinking this is why.
I look forward to hitting the rang this week and putting it together.

This is the most frustrating part of golf for me. You can do something not ideal and find a way to play with it...until it goes to shite. Then do the opposite for a while...until it goes to shite. Then...nothing works

I just took some natural takeaways in the living room and I’m fanning the club open to an extent, I wonder if stopped doing this and kept the face square what would happen.

Probably eventually hook it off the planet

Might work for a while though. I usually play my best golf immediately after changing something. It’s always short lived though.

Check to be sure your shoulders aren’t turning too flat in the backswing. That’ll affect the clubface also. Easier to make a slight change in the shoulders instead of doing something weird with the hands.

Oh is this not how you're supposed to do it? Because this is exactly how my golf game works
And then once nothing works, I get a lesson, and it fricks me up even more. Each cycle is about 3-4 months

Grabbed my Pro on the range and asked him to take a look at my swing to see if he saw anything. He made one fix - flattened my wrist at address so that it was more in-line with the shaft...monumental difference. Was hitting so much straighter on the course this afternoon. Shot an 84, but really should've been under 80, as I monkey fricked two holes.

It’s crazy how much wrist conditions affect the swing.

Your wrist controls so many things when hitting a ball.
