So how important is sw in a driver? Any of you experimented with cutting one down? Any of your experiences with this would be appreciated.

More important for some than others. Lower hdcps who have repeatable swings will see changes in flight/performance any time you change something like loft, swing weight, length, lie, etc. Spin changes; launch angle changes; face angle changes.

That being said, I think it's less important than your irons which you're swinging 40 times a round and something too heavy can wear you down on top of the issues with control.

I want heavy - I need to feel the club and the relation of the clubface to the swing.

As I got old, I lost the ability to sense exactly where the clubface was and my game deteriorated....and I can no longer play with heavy clubs due to my age...but your highly skilled ams and most pros will have heavier that normal weight.

Heavier weights will help skilled golfers be even more aware of clubface in relation to impact.

This is a good read, it’s all about the player top to bottom in regards to swingweight.

And in regards to a 6 iron.

In other words, cut it down and hit it. If I hit it great, never think about SW again? If bad, maybe add some weight to the head and try again?

Swing weight is a personal preference. I cut my driver down to about a 44.25" playing length. Gained distance and have better control. I think more should do it.

Another alternative from tinkering with adding weight is to play an ultra lite grip. I think Winn makes one that's pretty light. Avoid the heavier grips if you cut it down. YRMV

This makes total sense, but then you run into back weighting advocates.

For me, it is not nearly as critical as it is in irons. I’d say cut it and try it. If you lose the feel, you can try to add weight to the head, but I’ve had better luck just increasing total weight with a heavier shaft.

I haven’t found adding tape to the head or anything like that helped as much as higher shaft weight.

I've never been able to consistently drive a counter weighted driver. I get real sporadic. The only that improved a whole lot was counter balancing a putter. Dialed in the distance, bigly.

I was fitted in high school by the Titleist tour van (CEO's son went to my school, shoutout that connection). What is a remarkable difference between those guys and say GolfTech, they (van fitters) care less about the head and more about the physics of the shaft and how to fit a club to your swing/stance while increasing the performance of your game. While everyone on this board can tell you this/that/another stat about a shaft in regards to torque, stiffness, tip stiffness, kick, etc a NUMBER of fitters overlook the length. You'd be amazed at what happens when you chop a 1/4" of your driver. Taylormade made a sneaky move when they said "add yards to your drives" by adding 1/2 inch to the club. Drivers were 45.25"+ which will really mess up your golf swing if you aren't aware of that. Club head performance did not increase that drastically over prior models (RBZ vs Burner)
Note when you add weight, your ball flight will drop dramatically without adjusting your shaft accordingly.

So, targeted a certain head on eBay. Got a club for $45. Came with a good enough shaft to give it a try before just automatically pulling. Total weight was low, so after butt cutting an inch, I sent a 5 gram tip weight down the shaft with generous glue coating. It probably lodged about 3/4 down towards the head.

Regripped and headed to the range. OMG, I will never play today's driver lengths again. Is this thing as long as my M2? Pretty sure it's not, but it's way easier to hit, and it looks like I only have a one way miss. Pumped.

I'm debating taking off another quarter to get to 44"

Striped it today though, so probably wont change it up. I think most would benefit from shorter driver.

I've always had a problem with: if a little of something is good, then more will be better. So, now I want to buy a 12* SLDR and build it to 43.5
