Does getting fitted actually matter?

I’m guess I’m what you’d call a triple bogie type of player. But it’s okay because I’m on a mission to get better after hundreds of hours spent on the range trying to get better—no improvement yet but the code is being cracked.

Then one day at the range I thought hmmm “what if this is not me but my clubs not fitting me?” I just buy and use clubs as is, so that must be the reason for my bad game right?

I started playing March 27th

Wilson Staff DynaPower Max irons
Wilson Staff DynaPower Max Driver
Callaway Opus wedges
Scotty Cameron putter

I shot 100 on day 90.

Does it matter if I get fitted? When to do this?

I could break 80 before I ever really got fitted for a set.

But if the specs of your clubs are way off for you, it could be impacting your swing/score.

A fitted set isnt gonna shave a dozen strokes off your score. But an improper set could make you develop some bad habits.

There's YouTube videos of Bryson beating folks with children's clubs because he is an expert at being able to time whatever clubs are in his hands.

That being said the shafts on your clubs are a timing device. If you are not an expert then you would probably benefit to see if what you are playing is remotely close. The caveat being you have a somewhat repeatable ball flight.

At your level I would spend the money on lessons before I spent a ton on new clubs.

Dumb question of the day….

Does being fitted mean grips and club length sized to your body height and arm length?

Yes, that's a basic fitting and should also include lie angle.

A more advanced fitting will find the optimal shafts for your swing speed and how you torque the shaft, swing weight, dynamic lie angle, etc.

Honestly if you’re shooting over 120 then your swing is likely too inconsistent to benefit from a fitting. There are outlier cases if you’re extremely tall, short, or swing like a grandma. I’d wait until you’re shooting closer to 100 and making solid contact more times than not before dropping $100+ on a fitting and $1400+ on a set of irons.

It can make a huge difference if you bought the wrong clubs off the rack/online

My opinion is yes, it matters.

It doesn't matter what you are shooting now, if you are playing clubs that don't fit you, you can develop and groove bad swing habits that are hard to break.

The proper length and Lie are worth their weight in gold. I'm 6'4, I can't play standard length clubs and I need a 1 degree upright lie after 1/2 lengthening.

The way I look at it, golf is a expensive and hard game . Why not do everything that you can to get the most out of you round.
