This problem plagued me every once in a while, especially when I’m hung over. For me, it’s due to being off balance.

Put a ball under the outside of your take away foot, right foot for righty. Hit a few shots. It’ll keep you from swaying which changes your swing bottom.

Also, don’t decelerate.

Weight forward at least 60/40. Shorter backswing and stay aggressive. Visualize your follow through.

Make sure you are not swaying. My swing thoughts for all irons are rotate and strike. Get to your left side

It's your hips.

What are my hips doing to cause fat shots? Sliding?

It’s the opposite for me. I’m hitting my PW - 7i really clean right now. 6 - 4i is so inconsistent

Buy some club I saw on t.v. Yesterday during senior pga event.
They say it will specifically prevent chunking.

I doubt it.

You’re probably not getting your weight to your left side at impact and/or dipping your left shoulder. Put the ball back in your stance off your right testicle. Make sure you see the club hit the ball with your head behind the ball...your lower half should already be cleared to the left side at impact. If you start block the ball right or slicing it (or yank it left), then your swing plane is outside to in on your downswing. Good luck.

Not firing. you're not moving forward during the shot. This keeps the club from reaching the bottom in front of the ball.

The club is most likely coming in too steep. A decent pro can fix it in 5 min.

Do you chunk your practice swing? If not, then it's probably not your hips. You're either very aggressive because of heightened confidence due to being closer, or you're like me and ball placement is whack.

When I start chunking short irons, it's because I've messed with the ball placement. I am either to close to it and I stand up in my swing and compensate by chunking or it's to far away and I squat and thus chunk. Tinker with placement forward and back in stance proximity to your body. I'll typically move it back a little for short irons and grab the next club with smoother and "weaker" swing.
