All players within 3 shots of the leader should advance to Sunday.
What if you have 5 tied for the lead and 3 more one shot back? Will there be a sudden death to knock out someone so only 4 advance?
Although having a foursome play the final day together would be interesting.

I don't see how any of that makes it more appealing. If there are no starting strokes, why do we care how many make it to the weekend? What if the #1 player has a tough first two days? How does that make it better that they won't be there at the end?
Maybe I am misunderstanding. I am still holding out hope for match play.

There is no fair way to do this. You can’t have a year end playoff system that’s exciting while also being fair to the guy who had the best season

Yes you can. Currently, the Tour Championship has a $100M purse. Take $75M of the $100M purse and pay out the guys based on season standings before the Tour Championship.
Then have a normal golf tournament Tour Championship with a $25M purse, which would still have the largest winner’s share of any tournament.
