Bridgestone Tour B XS

I was given a couple sleeves of these to play and I thought I'd share my experience and ask some questions about this ball and others. This is the Tiger Wood's designed ball that Tiger also tees up on Tour. I would never pay this much for golf balls so it was interesting to tee up balls of this caliber and see what I think.
I teed these up at Sunflower Hills (of GoodGood & GM_Golf fame if you know them) and shot an 82 with about 5-6 lipouts. Not my best outing but MUCH more consistent than I had been. My thoughts:
- Feel off the club was ice. Definitely didn't feel like a rock and jumped off the driver face well. Felt nice off the irons and not hard. If it felt hard I would have noticed as the temps were only in the low 50s and hard balls usually hurt my hands a few times in that weather.
- Iron distance must have been good because I hit the longest 5i and 9i of my life with this ball.
- Workability was good. I dont care for high spin but I know it helps with working the ball. I was able to draw this a good 20 yards around a tall maple with no issues with my 9i. i'm normally the type to just shoot for center of the green but this time I had to try and draw it firm and it did and felt great doing it.
- Spin. They said Tiger designed this ball for extra spin and it shows. I'm not a high spin rate player but both my PW and 9i would backup about 9' to 10' on approach shots and this was with softish greens so the ground was absorbing a LOT of energy and still spun back. Never had a ball backup that much on me before but again I dont play high spin balls typically.
- Driver spin. I never get roll out with my driver but even with softish fairways none of my drives bounced backward with this ball. Usually my drives bounce backward in soft fairways a foot or two. I'd say these rolled out at least 15-20 yards. It was a nice change.
- Durability. I played one ball for 15 holes and never put a scar or scrape on the ball and that includes hitting at least 1 tree limb pretty solid.
All in all these seem like brilliant balls but they are pricey.
This gets to my question. Does anyone know of a ball that would be similar in low driver spin, feel and distance but a bit less spin and at a lower price point? This was the first new ball I've played in over a decade so I literally have no good reference points.

All premium balls are expensive. I would recommend the TM Tour Response or the Titleist Tour Speed for lower cost Urethane covered balls.

I'm a Maxfli groupie. Sold only at Dick's or Golf Galaxy. Amazing ball and great price. Can't find a better ball for price/performance.
I thought mygolfspy had a databass where they had distance, carry, spin rate, etc. for tons of balls but I can't find it. Do you know if that database still exists?

So what are all the typical cover options these days? I think I have seen thermoplastic, Urethane and a few others recently. What are considered premium cover materials vs more budget covers?

Jesus. Just look in the Reviews Section. Everything is there.
Not sure I totally trust MGS.
Go to YouTube and search Maxfli (or any ball) reviews.

thanks. I see what I was looking for is way at the bottom of that link.
I scoured their site several times recently and all I could find was the database for ball quality where they measured compression, roundness, weight, etc. I couldn't find the performance data.

quote:
What is the advantage of a Cast Urethane cover versus Surlyn®, balata, etc?
“Balata covers back in the early 1990’s were very soft and had great feel and great spin. However, they were not very durable at all and would cut or shear with clubs very easily.
Surlyn Covers have been used on golf balls for years, and have great durability when they are firmer in hardness and feel. However, when softer Surlyns are used, the shear durability gets worse, without creating spin like the old balata balls.
Urethanes have been used in golf balls for quite some time as well. There are two types of urethanes used . Thermoplastic and Cast Thermoset. In my opinion, the Cast Thermoset Urethane allows us to create very thin, and very soft covers BUT has excellent durability. So in summary, the feel and spin like the old balata, but the durability of the firmer surlyns. An excellent combination for performance.
However, the manufacturing process that goes into creating Cast Urethane Covers is more costly. This is why only a select few golf ball manufacturers use Cast Urethane Covers and only on select ball lines, and this process is what really separates some balls apart from others.” Dean Snell
The Cast Urethane Cover is used in the construction of Snells My Tour Ball.

Thanks. That was very helpful.
And that Taylormade Tour Response looks perfect. I think I will try those.

I have played those TM Soft Response and you can’t beat them for the price. I’ll be getting a large order of snells but I’m waiting for Black Friday to order more so that’s my go to in the meantime. I’ll have to check out the Maxflis that’s the first I’ve heard good reviewes.
Anybody try the TM Project A?

Apparently the only difference between the TP5s and the Project A are it’s 3 layers instead of 5. Same cover material and dimple pattern. TM doesn’t manufacture them anymore, shocker
I purchased 2 dozen while I wait for Snell’s Black Friday rates. I’m pretty pumped I play an Arnold Palmer design that’s pretty tough Friday.

I thought the TM Tour Response was the new Project(A)? No?

Might be but those are still in the $30+ range, right? These were $28/dozen

That’s bc they’re the old version.
But a good ball no doubt.

Snell MTB-X is my favorite ball but I go get the 2 for $35 Maxfli tours when I forget to order Snell’s and there’s not a ton of difference for me.
