I have committed to really understanding the basics of golf and a friend from work recommended this book. Like the book suggests, this first week I have focused only on the grip. Played a round yesterday with just that in mind, no focusing on score, and I really like the way the grip feels.

Prior to this I would always finish a round with a big blister on my trail hand thumb and my pointer finger. After using this grip no blisters. Hit the ball well with my irons as well. Driver is now shite though.

Anybody read this book? I had no idea the grip was that crucial. Makes a big difference.

Grip is probably the most important thing, only part that actually touches the club. True there are many different variations, but having a “good” one, or one that fits your swing is key.

Read it as a teenager and a few things stuck with me for a while. Definitely worth a read for any golfer. This and Harvey Pennicks Little Green Book.

Grip size is seriously overlooked.

For a lot of years I used regular grips because I didn’t know any better. Got fitted, and had a mid-sized grip put on my driver.

Now I have them on every club and my accuracy is dramatically improved with my irons, and I hit it further.

This is the type of thing people say because it sounds good but is ridiculous. Like when people say chipping is more important than hitting good shots off the tee.

What they really mean is that it’s overlooked. Yes the grip is very very important, but it’s not more important than a fundamentally solid swing or great ball striking. It’s certainly not the “most important thing”

It was the basis of my teaching philosophy when I worked in the business.

When I start losing my drive I got back to his swing plane idea. I picture the picture in the book.
It really helped me understand how to swing the club.

Books are great. They’re like YouTube videos. You can find good info from them.

However, there’s nothing like hooking up with a professional who knows what he is doing. Then, practicing what he’s teaching you.
