FalconHead , Avery Ranch and Terra Vista . 1,2,3 in that order. Same owner for all 3 and runs a tight operation.

FalconHead is fantastic if in shape which should be minus no fukin rain for 3-4 weeks so it could be hard as a rock in some areas.

Way better views at Avery. I just like the course at Star Ranch better. But I think it has more to do with my personal preferences of the course style.

I don’t love Avery for the price. It could also be score based

I score way better at Star.

I’m erratic so at Star I score better being more wide open. I like Avery because it is a true test that tells you everything you need to know about your game and plus it’s a very quality course and well taken care of.

I’ve shot under par about the same number of times I’ve dunked in my life (very very few ) so when it happens I become more biased towards the course.

But I get what you’re saying. Avery’s generally in pretty good shape outside of the bunkers.

I’m a Muny rat though so I probably am not the best person to assess those courses.

Wait there are bunkers at Avery? j/k
I'll admit I defend it probably a little cause its my neighborhood course and I've played most of the public tracks in Austin to compare. Also as hot as its been I assume Star Ranch is a nightmare right now with no damn shade.
The real hidden gems are in Georgetown north of Austin in and around Sun City. Mostly an well to do older folks community but mainly quality golfers with good pace of play(Around 4 hours) and kept up really well.

Oh, I defend Lions like nobody’s business so I get having bias.

I’ve only played Avery and Star a handful of times in my life, and only a couple times in the last two years.

I guess I just don’t think there’s any truly GREAT public course in Austin. Last time I played Wolfdancer (October) it was in atrocious shape for $180 and that’s the one that gets talked about most.

As some have said I got a 5+ hour round at Falconhead. Had a 3:16 tee time and gave up after 11 when I saw three groups waiting on 12, and it was already 7:30.Was a fun course, cool coming from Louisiana to see elevation changes and good views of the Hills. Course was a bit dry which I was expecting and you could tell it got a ton of play. Greens were HARD and fast, was hard as hell to get a ball to stop with wedges around the greens. Id recommend but no shot Id pay 100+ like the usual rate is right now.

Everyone downvoted me. It’s sucks trying to play golf in Austin right now. You have to plan a mid week, mid day round a week in advance...and still plan on 5 hours unless you’re a member at a club.

Just not enough courses and $50 gets you a prime time goat ranch.
