Anyone over 50 just start over on golf?

I love the game but I stink at it. Has anyone ever just started completely over with intense lessons?
Did it help or did your old habits come back?
Would one of those golf camps help?
I either want to get better or just say f' it and start fishing more.

Instruction and putting in the time will get you where you want to go. That being said, golf isn’t easy so you have to be prepared for the grind. Being over 50 won’t do anything but force you to swing smoother (if you want to stay healthy) and sharpening your short game.

Thanks.
I tried lessons once years ago and it destroyed my game.
My mind is so confused I don't have a clue what I am doing, just 10000 swing thoughts going all at once.
I can still putt like a champ which is ironic because when I started golf I could hit the ball decent but couldn't putt.

Yep sometimes you just have to go through it. Plateaus, confusion, these things are unfortunately all part of the journey. Busting through and making the shot you dread into your bitch and learning to understand the things that seem like a black box make it all worth it.

Get a pro that is more about the “what”, than the “how”.
Books by Earnest Jones and Manuel de la Torres may be of interest to you.
Thinking is overrated. Swing like a child.uninhibited and free..

Kids that start young before baseball have an advantage, IMO
I just had a sim completed and we love it. Only been a month, so have yet to be able to notice a hdcp difference, but at this age, every day feels like I’m starting over

Just wanted to share this youtube video of a cheap but (I believe) effective training tool.

I am 54, and you just described me to a 'T'
Scrambled up swing thoughts. Did some lessons mid-summer last year which destroyed my confidence to the point I stopped playing. Started back up last month; swing still a mess. It's like, I can't rely on feel like I used to. My flexibility is not what it used to be either, but I'm not ready to develop the "old-man game" just yet.

I am a fan of Torres… his style got me away from thinkingfeeling forearm and hands to feeling more upper arm and shoulder … if that makes sense

What part of your game stinks, all of it or just certain parts?
Try to have all of your swing thoughts while your practicing, when you play, just play and have fun and have realistic expectations. If you're not a very good player, don't expect to go out and break 90 every time, it's not going to happen.
Are you playing the right tee boxes. I'm 51 and can't hit it as far as I used to so playing a more forward tee helps me not have long irons or fairway woods into every green.
If you think you have a 7 iron into a green, take a 6, most amateurs don't take enough club leaving themselves awkward distances. Taking the time to find your true distances with each club is important. Just because you hit your 7 iron 185 yards one time out of 10 doesn't mean that you hit it that far every time.
Lessons help but they take several weeks to take effect, you're going to suck worse than you already do right after a lesson because what you learned is new and doesn't feel right. Keep practicing the lesson learned and within a few weeks it will feel right.
Golf is hard, besides hitting a baseball, it's probably the hardest game to get good at. It takes incredible hand eye coordination, body control, mental toughness and feel to be able to be good at this game.
In other words, I'd probably just start fishing.

I'm over 50, and really thinking of nuking my game. The lack of hip drive/rotation is fatal on irons and gives false hope on Driver.

At age 61 I got my first lesson ever. Was because my back was hurting after rounds. Turns out I was too flat and reaching for it.
Since then I’ve gotten my game back and broken 70 twice. Which means I’ll probably shoot 85 next time out.

Back with the hands, through with the arms is how he says it at times, but mostly he wants golfers to be task oriented.
Swing to the target.
I like the Ernest Jones/Manuel de la Torres type teaching.
A swing is a continuous motion is sort of their base teaching. It is hard to break into parts and positions since it ultimately is motion. There is an old video of a senior tour player giving a clinic that really illustrates how a swing works.

55 and getting back into it after a 10-12yr layoff. Lessons is the way. The little I have played the last 9 months, maybe 200 swings, I wasn't going to figure it out myself to get back to where I was before. Get the lessons, put in the reps.

Thanks for all the replies.
I can't hit my irons for anything, low line drives with every club.
Fought a really bad hook for the longest time.
Just a total mess.

Give yourself a chance to improve.
Golf is hard on a good day so as you start playing and practicing more, just try to remember each time you make a good shot.
Then with time and patience, the good shots will come more often.
Biggest thing is nobody cares what you shoot. We are not making a living doing this. Try your best on each shot and live with the result during the round.
Identify your weakest points of play, and work with a teaching pro to sort out how to do better.
I did not score my best this morning but I hit some shots I was pleased with in spite of not having the best part of my game today. Some of it was I tried some very unlikely shots since it was so cold and we were just out for fun. Tried a hook that went straight into a garage door! ??
I did have 2 sand saves. One was ridiculous. Had to stand with both feet out of the bunker. Got it on the green and made a 10 foot putt.
So on a tough day I still had a shot that was unique and fun. I also had some shots that were not anywhere near my best.
This time of year it is hard to improve with cold short days. Go easy on yourself.
