Getting into golf now. Max budget is <$1,200.00. Looking at used, but more importantly gonna take lessons right out the gate so I actually hit decently. Any tips or advice?

If you are in Baton Rouge I recommend Schneider's Golf Mechanics on Bluebonnet. Owner is a good guy and gives great lessons. The place has indoor simulators and cameras to record your swing. He is also very good at fitting clubs and letting you try out different shafts.

If you sign up to be a member you can go practice there a few days a week. Some people say that hitting on a mat in a simulator isn't the same as real golf but in the baton rouge area you have the driving range on sherwood which rarely has any grass at all and you have santa maria which most of the time is mats only. The only difference is that at this place on every shot you get valuable feedback like club speed, club path, spin etc. and you can watch every swing in slow motion right there, not to mention you can practice rain or shine etc.

Is that with or without bag, balls, glove, extra stuff?

I could probably go into Edwin and build a decent bag on 1200... Especially with what they had this past weekend..

It’s flexible, but I would like to try to get everything for that.

$1200 for clubs or $1200 for clubs and lessons?

Personally, I think $1200 is overkill for a beginner. Spend a few hundred dollars on some used clubs and get some lessons, dial in your swing, dial in your putting etc. If you are still loving golf after a year, you will know enough to be able to buy some nicer clubs that fit you.

One of the reasons I suggested Schneiders is cause he has some used sets for sale in there that you can try out before you buy at a pretty reasonable price. Facebook is littered with clubs that are a few years old but still work perfectly fine and are not very different than the latest stuff.

Gear/clubs/etc. I expect it to be a lot for lessons.

Will take your advice.

Lessons usually arent crazy expensive but they are worth it if you find a good instructor.

Lessons can be expensive, but if you actually do the work outside of the lessons, you can get by with having a lesson every two or three weeks rather than every week. Spend those weeks really working on what you learned on your last lesson.

You will find varying opinions here. I bet there are a considerable number that think $1200 is a very reasonable price for a beginner to spend on clubs and to each their own.

The Wilson Launchpad driver may be worth a look

You can put together a decent set for $1200.

OR

Tour edge and PXG have some full bag deals you might want to look at that might fit your budget.

If you want an older set to take lessons and learn with I have a sent of Cleveland irons 4-pw, a putter an older callaway driver and an older bag you can have. They were given to me to help me get started and I would gladly do the same for someone else.

They are not new clubs. Or fancy clubs. But to learn to swing and get the basics down they are good for that.

If interest let me know.

You can do it. Just find good quality 3 or 4 year old stuff. Just kind of scour the local shop’s used racks. You’ll run across some deals somewhere.

For Driver, FW, Hybrids, look in the Ping G400, TaylorMade M2 and Sim2 families. Will probably be the most forgiving options.

Irons, check out same as above and add Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metals to the list to look for.

Wedges, Cleveland RTX & CBX, Vokey SM7 or SM8, Ping Glide’s, Callaway Jaws.

Putter, you can probably find you a solid Odyssey putter for a reasonable price.

Just a few things to be looking for and try to start piecing together. I’m sure some others will chime with ideas as well.

ETA: Or just take the dude’s offer above and confirm you actually like playing

I really appreciate that. Love how this board comes together to help. I live in TN now, so I don’t think it would be possible to grab them. Maybe someone else could benefit.

Ebay
Callaway Pre-owned
2nd Swing

PXG - The 0211 iron are 99.00 per club with your choice of shafts. Really good irons.

Most importantly is to know your specs before any purchase. Money spent on a fitting is always a good expenditure.

Try to figure out what flex best fits you, then look for any for any of the major OEM game improvement irons on Facebook market place or pawn Shops. I see full or mostly full bags all the time in the 6-700 range and they’re quality items. Just maybe 3-5 seasons old.
